US to Release Commemorative Passports Featuring Donald Trump
The White House has announced the release of a limited number of commemorative passports that will feature a portrait of United States President Donald Trump. This initiative is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, which will take place in July. According to administration officials, the new passport design will be available to any American citizen applying for a passport once it launches, continuing as long as supplies last.
The only location where the commemorative passports can be obtained will be at the Washington Passport Agency. Design renders released by the US State Department showcase an image of Trump alongside the text of the Declaration of Independence, the American flag, and his signature highlighted in gold.
A White House spokesperson stated, "President Trump's new patriotic passport design provides yet another great way Americans can join in the spectacular celebrations for America's 250th birthday." They also emphasised that this release is a part of a broader initiative celebrating national pride and patriotism during what they termed a historic semiquincentennial celebration. The spokesperson referenced various events associated with the celebration, including the UFC250 Fight, the Great American State Fair, and the Freedom250 Grand Prix.
The current design of US passports typically showcases significant moments in American history, such as the Moon landing and symbols like the Statue of Liberty. It remains uncertain whether citizens will have the option to decline this special edition passport. This new passport is one of several recent efforts by the Trump administration to link the president's identity with various government endeavours and public institutions. Recently, the US Mint announced plans to produce a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump for the anniversary, and he is also set to be the first sitting president to have his signature appear on US currency.
In addition, the Kennedy Center board has voted to rename the performing arts centre as the Trump-Kennedy Center in tribute to the president, which has drawn criticism from members of the late President John F. Kennedy's family. Earlier this month, the White House unveiled plans for an arch named the "Arc de Trump," which has received preliminary approval from a federal panel, despite considerable public and preservationist opposition.
Trump is continuing to put his stamp on the White House itself by demolishing the East Wing to create a new ballroom, a change that has prompted a lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation over claims that construction started without proper permits. As part of the lead-up to the anniversary, discussions are ongoing about various opportunities to celebrate the nation's history, bolstered by Trump’s sentiments of renewing patriotism among Americans during these engagements.
