US President Donald Trump addresses Iran's request to lift the blockade and criticises their nuclear negotiations as tensions mount in the region.

United States President Donald Trump has indicated that Iran has reached out, expressing a desire for Washington to lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports. Despite this outreach, Trump has rejected Tehran's peace proposal and affirmed that the US will maintain its military blockade until a satisfactory nuclear agreement is in place. According to a report by Axios, Trump stated, "The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing. They are choking like a stuffed pig, and it is going to be worse for them. They can’t have a nuclear weapon."

The Iranian government, meanwhile, recently proposed a cessation of hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, although it suggested that nuclear negotiations could be postponed indefinitely.

In a related development, Israeli military forces executed a series of strikes on southern Lebanon overnight, targeting what they identified as Hezbollah command centres and military positions. The Israeli military claimed it eliminated a Hezbollah fighter in one of the operations. Despite the ongoing ceasefire, Israel has reiterated its intention to pursue actions that ensure the safety of its soldiers and civilians in northern Israel.

The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, emphasised the critical nature of free maritime transit at a recent national maritime conference. He underscored that, for a nation like Germany, maritime security is crucial for economic stability. "We are seeing these days that when geopolitical tensions cause maritime bottlenecks, the global economy is hit, and we are hit where we are most vulnerable," he remarked, noting the intricate relationship between economic health and national security.

As tensions escalate, Foad Izadi, an Iranian analyst, warned that lofty US expectations are obstructing potential peace efforts, indicating that war may be imminent. "We’ve had this statement from the Iranian military saying it’s running out of patience. I think you may see war before you see the next round of negotiations," he stated.

Izadi further explained that while Iran is prepared to make short-term concessions regarding its nuclear programme, the current demands from the US are seen as unrealistic. He expressed scepticism about the US Department of Defense's cost assessment of $25 billion for the ongoing war, suggesting that it is likely underestimated.

Amidst these developments, Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, highlighted Washington's apparent lack of a coherent strategy in its campaign against Iran, echoing a growing chorus of criticism from European leaders. He stated, "Right now, I’m struggling to see any coherent strategy behind this."

In the US, during an address before the House Armed Services Committee, Hegseth defended military operations against Iran, suggesting that they represent a significant success for the US. However, in the face of mounting international scrutiny, questions remain about the long-term effectiveness of US actions in the region. Kristersson's remarks, along with those of other leaders, have led to renewed calls for a more strategic approach to dealing with Iran's nuclear ambitions and regional influence.
