US President Donald Trump welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla at a state dinner highlighting the US-UK relationship.

The White House was transformed into an elegant setting for a state dinner as US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The event, reflecting shades of pink and adorned with cherry blossoms, celebrated the longstanding relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American independence.

During the evening, President Trump raised a toast to King Charles, expressing that the bond between the nations is a 'friendship unlike any other on Earth'. He acknowledged the UK’s influence, attributing a 'great, great gift' of heritage to its history, and celebrated the two nations standing united against challenges such as communism and tyranny.

King Charles presented President Trump with a historic bell from the HMS Trump, a submarine launched in 1944, as a symbol of the shared history between the two countries. He connected this to the idea of a 'shining future', joking about the infamous event when British troops burned down the White House in 1814.

The dinner featured a carefully curated menu overseen by the First Lady, beginning with garden herb velouté and hearts of palm salad, followed by ravioli with fresh herbs from the White House garden. The main dish was Dover sole meunière, complemented with a chocolate gâteau for dessert. Decor inspired by English gardens created an intimate atmosphere with tables adorned in green linens and seasonal centrepieces.

The guest list included over 100 prominent attendees, such as members of President Trump’s cabinet, dignitaries, Supreme Court justices, and notable businessmen and women including tech leaders like Jeff Bezos and Tim Cook.

The evening's dress code was white tie, and both the First Lady and Queen Camilla showcased stunning haute couture gowns, with the former donning a pale pink Dior creation while the latter opted for a deep pink gown.

Various attendees responded positively to the evening's formalities, enjoying the combination of humour and history: King Charles used wit to comment on previous American-British conflicts while maintaining a tone of camaraderie. His remarks concluded with light-hearted references to shared history, asserting the importance of the strong ties between the nations even amid contemporary political disagreements.
