US Issues Travel Advisory for Bangladesh Ahead of Osman Hadi's Funeral
The United States government has issued a travel advisory for its citizens in Bangladesh, coinciding with the funeral of prominent youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The advisory comes in response to recent unrest sparked by Hadi's death, which has led to increased security measures in the capital city of Dhaka.
Hadi, a spokesperson for the student organisation Inqilab Mancha, died this week, prompting widespread protests and acts of vandalism. Demonstrators have demanded accountability for his death, which has been met with violence. On Friday, rioters vandalised properties and set fire to the offices of two major media organisations in Dhaka, according to reports from the Press Trust of India.
The US advisory cautioned American citizens to prepare for potential disruptions in Dhaka. It recommended that travellers reassess their plans and remain alert during this period of heightened tension. The advisory stated, "Individuals are encouraged to review scheduled travel through and around Dhaka during the above listed timeframes and allow additional time for possible delays."
The funeral service for Sharif Osman Hadi is scheduled for 2 pm local time at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. The US advisory warned that traffic disruptions are anticipated during the ceremony and advised against attending any demonstrations, as these gatherings could escalate into confrontations. It noted, "Gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence."
In the lead-up to the funeral, Bangladesh's interim government has called for calm among the public. Officials have requested that citizens refrain from engaging with "fringe elements" that may seek to incite violence during this sensitive time. As reported by local media, security has been significantly reinforced, with police, Border Guard Bangladesh, and military personnel deployed across Dhaka.
Hadi's body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 6 pm local time on a flight from Singapore. Inqilab Mancha announced on social media that Hadi will be buried next to the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, following his funeral prayer at Manik Mia Avenue. The organisation urged attendees to maintain order and respect the family's wishes by avoiding public viewing of the body.
In addition to issuing the travel advisory, the US government outlined several actions recommended for its citizens in Bangladesh: review and reconsider travel plans during the specified timeframe; exercise heightened caution near large gatherings or protests; remain aware of surroundings; and monitor local media for updates.
The situation continues to develop as the country prepares for the funeral and more potential demonstrations.
