Karnataka Political Tensions Rise Over Chief Minister Position
Karnataka leaders await decision from Congress high command amid ongoing power struggle over chief minister role following halfway mark in government term.

In Karnataka, political tensions are escalating as Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah await a decision from the Congress high command regarding the chief ministerial position. This situation has arisen following the Congress government reaching the halfway point in its five-year term on November 20, 2025.

Reports from Congress sources indicate that legislators aligned with Shivakumar have gathered in New Delhi, advocating for him to be appointed as the next chief minister. When questioned about a potential meeting with the high command, Shivakumar stated, "The high command said that they are going to call both of us when the perfect time comes. We will wait for the call."

Previously, both Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah had engaged in discussions over breakfast on two separate occasions within the same week, but the impasse over the leadership role remains unresolved. This outreach effort was reportedly prompted by the Congress high command, urging both leaders to demonstrate unity ahead of the Belagavi legislative session that commenced on December 8.

The political climate has intensified as Shivakumar hinted at a previous agreement among senior party leaders regarding a leadership transition following the Congress's significant victory in the 2023 elections.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the situation, downplaying the notion of an internal conflict between the two leaders. He expressed confidence that the high command would convene to discuss the matter, stating, "Only the people there can say what the government is doing. But I would like to say that we will resolve such issues. People in the high command — Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and I — will sit together and deliberate on this… We will give the medicine when required." This statement marks the first public acknowledgment from Kharge of the ongoing power struggle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.

Shivakumar reiterated that any plans for a visit to Delhi to meet with the high command would be communicated transparently to the public. He assured reporters, "I will inform you, I won't do anything without informing you. I will not go hiding from you." He confirmed that both leaders would travel to Delhi together when the high command deems it appropriate.

As the political situation develops, Siddaramaiah has asserted his intention to remain in office. During a recent assembly session, he confidently declared, "I am confident that the high command will allow me to complete five years’ term," while addressing questions from members of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party regarding the government's commitments to North Karnataka.

He further emphasised that he has never claimed that his term would be limited to two-and-a-half years, countering speculation regarding a previous power-sharing agreement with Shivakumar.

In the midst of this political drama, Shivakumar is scheduled to visit New Delhi on Tuesday to meet with various central ministers concerning issues related to the water resources department. He commented on the importance of discussing river projects such as Mahadayi and the Krishna water award, highlighting the broader implications of the ongoing political developments in Karnataka.
