US-Iran Peace Talks Scheduled in Islamabad Amid Tensions
Expected peace negotiations between the United States and Iran are set to take place in Islamabad, Pakistan, amidst heightened regional tensions. The talks will commence on Friday, April 10, which has been declared a public holiday in the capital, Islamabad, for security reasons.
A critical backdrop to these discussions is the ongoing violence in Lebanon, where the Lebanese government faces significant challenges from Israel, particularly following a series of attacks that have resulted in over 1,500 fatalities, including numerous children. With the recently established ceasefire raising questions about Lebanon's position, the country is closely monitoring the negotiations, seeking assurance regarding its inclusion in the peace discussions.
The American delegation will be headed by Vice President JD Vance, supported by special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior advisor Jared Kushner. The Iranian contingent is expected to be led by Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf. However, the participation of other key figures such as representatives from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi remains uncertain.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, will preside over the conversations. In light of the conflict, Prime Minister Sharif has received requests from Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to confirm Lebanon's protection under the ceasefire. In response, Sharif has condemned the ongoing Israeli strikes in Beirut and called for a clear affirmation of Lebanon's inclusion in the truce negotiations.
Tensions are also heightened due to Israel's recent assertion that it remains unconvinced about Pakistan's role as a mediator. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his country’s objective to disarm Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, further complicating the peace efforts. Israel's ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, explicitly stated that he does not trust Pakistan, citing issues related to terrorism and Pakistan's non-recognition of Israel as key reasons for this perspective.
As diplomatic efforts unfold, the international community will closely observe the outcome of these talks and their potential impact on the stability of the region. Further complicating the situation, Iran has threatened to restart military operations if assaults on Lebanon do not cease. The situation remains fluid, with both US and Iranian officials hopeful that the negotiations in Islamabad will yield positive results despite the surrounding uncertainties.
