Ayush Shetty Stuns World No. 7 Li Shi Feng at Asia Championships
In an impressive showing at the Badminton Asia Championships held in Ningbo, China, Ayush Shetty produced a stunning upset by defeating World No. 7 Li Shi Feng. Shetty's victory in straight games, concluded with scores of 21-13 and 21-16, marks a significant milestone for the young badminton player from Karnataka.
Shetty's performance was characterised by his powerful backhand and sharp smashes, which effectively disrupted Feng's rhythm throughout the match. The skilled execution of angled shots kept the reigning Hong Kong Open champion off balance and prevented him from settling into a consistent pattern of play.
Reflecting on his strategy, Shetty commented on his recent focus, saying, "I'm trying to bring variations on my smashes from the backside of the court. I'm confident of my long rallies as well." The influence of his coach, Irwansyah, was also evident in Shetty's enhanced gameplay.
While Shetty celebrated his advancement, the tournament delivered mixed results for India. Lakshya Sen, the runner-up at the recent All England Open Championship, faced an unexpected exit in the first round. He was defeated in two games (12-21, 19-21) by Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu. Sen encountered difficulties right from the start, struggling to secure crucial points which allowed Lee to establish an early advantage. Although Sen exhibited improved performance in the second game, he ultimately succumbed to Lee.
In the women's singles, P.V. Sindhu, an accomplished player with multiple titles to her name, managed to progress to the second round after a hard-fought battle. She triumphed over Malaysia's Wong Ling Ching with scores of 15-21, 21-11, and 21-19. Although Sindhu appeared off to a shaky start in the first game, she demonstrated resilience and skill, particularly in the concluding stages, to clinch her victory.
Additionally, Unnati Hooda, another promising young player, made headlines by defeating Thailandās Supanida Katethong with scores of 23-25, 21-8, and 21-18, showcasing her determination to compete at the highest level.
Looking ahead, the Asian Championships appear set for a thrilling Thursday, with both Ayush Shetty and P.V. Sindhu preparing for their Round of 16 matches. Shetty is set to clash with Chi Yu-jen, while Sindhu will face Wang Zhi Yi. Following suit, HS Prannoy is also moving forward in the tournament after besting Nguyen Hai Dang and preparing to contest Weng Hong Yang from China.
The outcomes of these upcoming matches are eagerly anticipated as the players strive to assert their dominance on this prestigious continental stage.
