US Concerned Over Israel's Dependency on American Missile Interceptors
A report highlights the disparity in interceptor usage between the US and Israel during recent conflicts, raising concerns among US allies.

According to a report published on Thursday by The Washington Post, US military officials have expressed alarm over Israel's reliance on American interceptor systems amidst ongoing hostilities with Iran. The analysis indicates that the United States deployed a significantly higher number of interceptors to counter Iranian missile threats aimed at Israel compared to those used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The report states that US forces used approximately 200 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors, representing about half of their total stockpile of this system. In addition, more than 100 Standard Missile-3 and Standard Missile-6 interceptors were deployed by the US Navy aboard ships in the Mediterranean Sea during the ongoing conflict.

In stark contrast, Israel employed fewer than 100 Arrow 3 missiles and around 90 David Sling interceptors. A significant portion of these were focused on addressing threats from groups such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, rather than the more advanced Iranian ballistic missiles that are considered a greater strategic challenge.

The Pentagon's assessment, which indicates a substantial US military presence in high-altitude missile defence, highlights an essential disparity in the defensive burden of low-altitude operations. Israel's Iron Dome reportedly maintained over a 90% success rate against a multitude of threats, including drones and cruise missiles, according to data from the Jewish Institute for National Security in America (JINSA).

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, stated, "Both Israel and the United States carried the defensive burden equitably during Operation Epic Fury, which saw both countries employ fighter aircraft, counter-unmanned aerial systems, and various advanced air and missile defence capabilities with maximal effectiveness."

The Israeli Embassy in Washington corroborated Parnell's remarks, noting that operations were highly coordinated to the advantage of both nations and their allies.

Growing apprehensions have emerged among US allies regarding the potential depletion of interceptor stockpiles. As the US struggles to keep production levels in line with the demands of ongoing military engagements, nations such as Japan and South Korea have raised concerns due to their own regional threats from China and North Korea. A report earlier this year indicated that the US was contemplating repositioning some of its THAAD interceptors from South Korea to the Middle East to address the escalating situation.

In June 2025, prior to a military operation targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, the US moved three of its eight Patriot batteries to the Middle East. This deployment was temporary, with the batteries returning to South Korea in October of the same year.

A study conducted by the US Congress, released on March 25, expressed concerns regarding the THAAD inventory available in the near future. It pointed out that the extensive use of interceptors during Operation Epic Fury has further diminished their already limited stock. The study concluded that it would take several years for the US to replenish its interceptor supplies, as current production is insufficient to ensure air defence for allied nations in the context of prolonged conflicts.
