Pakistan's Army Chief visits Tehran to mediate US-Iran conflict. Talks show progress, but uncertainties about a final agreement remain.

Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, has arrived in Tehran, initiating a significant diplomatic visit aimed at facilitating peace negotiations between the United States and Iran. The Pakistan military confirmed that this trip is part of ongoing mediation efforts to reach a resolution regarding the ongoing conflict in the region.

Indirect discussions are currently underway between US and Iranian officials, according to Iran's ISNA News Agency. There are reports of exchanges of messages and draft texts between both parties. An Iranian official, speaking to Al Jazeera, indicated that negotiations are nearing a potential agreement.

Despite these efforts, there remains uncertainty about whether a conclusive deal can be achieved. The talks are particularly crucial given the current geopolitical climate, as US military resources have been significantly engaged in supporting Israel amid tensions with Iran.

Oil markets are reacting to the lack of clarity in the negotiations, leading to a rise in crude prices on Friday. Brent crude futures increased by $2.38, reaching $104.96 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude rose by $1.73, reaching $98.08 a barrel. Despite this increase, both benchmarks are on track for a weekly decline due to overall market scepticism regarding the prospects for peace.

A senior Iranian source, speaking to Reuters, mentioned that although a deal has not yet been solidified, progress has been made in narrowing the differences between both sides. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that there have been positive indications in talks, although he underscored that any arrangement concerning the Strait of Hormuz must be satisfactory to the United States.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has emphasised that the main objective of these negotiations is the cessation of hostilities. Concurrently, the European Union moved closer to imposing sanctions against Iranian officials obstructing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that such actions contravene international law.

On a related note, six Lebanese paramedics lost their lives in recent Israeli airstrikes, which have drawn condemnations from Lebanon’s health ministry for allegedly violating international law. This incident underscores the heightened tensions in the region.

Pakistan's military chief is expected to hold talks with Iranian leaders during this visit, as diplomatic relations between the two countries continue to develop. Additionally, a Qatari delegation has also arrived in Tehran to assist in the peace negotiations, reflecting ongoing efforts from various regional stakeholders.

US Secretary of State Rubio cautioned against overestimating the advancements made thus far, while underscoring that the international community is closely monitoring the situation. The geopolitical landscape remains intricate, and the outcome of the ongoing negotiations carries significant implications for the region's future stability.
