US Cleared $6.6bn Arms Sale to Israel Amid Ongoing Conflicts

The United States has formally approved an arms sale to Israel valued at $6.67 billion, a decision announced by the US Department of State. This approval comes during a fragile ceasefire period in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has had devastating humanitarian impacts in the Gaza Strip. The sale includes 30 Apache attack helicopters, costing approximately $3.8 billion, as well as infantry assault vehicles worth around $1.98 billion.

The Apache helicopters will be supplied to Israel by major defence contractors Boeing and Lockheed Martin. A further $740 million contract will address equipment upgrades and maintenance for existing Israeli military vehicles, and an additional $150 million will be allocated for light utility helicopters.

Since October 2023, the situation in Gaza has escalated dramatically, with health officials reporting at least 71,662 fatalities due to ongoing military operations.

A statement from the US Department of State reiterated America’s dedication to supporting Israel's security. It noted, “The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US national interests to assist Israel in developing and maintaining a strong and prepared self-defence capability.” This position aligns with the ongoing military assistance the US provides to Israel, which significantly impacts the country’s military capabilities.

Human rights organisations and various United Nations experts have repeatedly called for the US to discontinue arms shipments to Israel, arguing that these sales facilitate Israel's military actions in Gaza. Despite the existing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, violence continues, with reports indicating that Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes and other operations resulting in further civilian casualties.

The announcement of this arms sale also coincided with another sizeable transaction, wherein the US approved a $9 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia that includes 730 Patriot missiles. This acquisition is aimed at enhancing Saudi Arabia's air defence capabilities amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, particularly concerning Iran.

In the context of these transactions, analysts and officials assert that the new military equipment will enhance Israel's operational readiness and reinforce its capacity to defend its territory and population. However, the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to draw international concern and condemnation, particularly in light of rising casualties and the destruction caused by ongoing military activities.
