The United Arab Emirates has conferred a prestigious honour on Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, along with his flydubai crew, for their courageous actions during a critical cockpit incident on September 30. The honour was in recognition of the extraordinary bravery demonstrated when Captain Machchhar, despite being severely injured, managed to open the cockpit door, enabling crew members and passengers to intervene effectively to prevent a potential disaster.

The First Class Order of Zayed II was awarded to the crew members involved in the incident by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This accolade highlights the crew’s swift actions to ensure the safety of passengers and secure the aircraft during the emergency situation.

Internationally, Captain Machchhar has received accolades for his heroism from various leaders including those from India, the UAE, Israel and the United States. As part of this recognition, Israel also announced a civilian bravery award for the pilot, which will be presented following his recovery.

The awards were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE. During the presentation on October 27, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed acknowledged the crew’s professionalism and courage, asserting the country's commitment to prioritising the safety and security of its citizens and visitors.

Captain Machchhar and his crew members expressed their gratitude for the recognition and took pride in their actions. On October 3, Sheikh Hamdan had visited the injured pilot during his recovery, commending Machchhar for his courage and commitment to passenger safety.

In a statement on social media, Sheikh Hamdan praised Machchhar for showing exceptional responsibility and care for human life, highlighting that the UAE takes pride in having him as part of its national story. He described the UAE as “a nation of compassion, a nation of peace, and a nation of life.”

Additionally, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority had previously commended Captain Machchhar, his crew, and the passengers who assisted in managing the incident. The bravery of Captain Machchhar received widespread support, with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi referring to him as a hero, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump also acknowledged his remarkable actions in safeguarding the lives of others during the crisis.
