Drone Strike in Sudan's Nyala Market Results in Over 100 Casualties
A drone attack on a market in Sudan's Nyala leads to over 100 deaths and injuries, escalating ongoing conflict in the region.

A drone strike on a market in Nyala, located in Sudan’s Darfur region, has resulted in at least 100 fatalities and over 113 injuries, according to local health officials. Witnesses reported that the attack occurred late on Monday evening at approximately 8pm local time. The market is situated in the north of Nyala, which has been identified as the unofficial capital of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Local medical sources cited by media outlets, including AFP, confirm that the casualties include both armed fighters and civilians who frequented the market. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the RSF, which erupted into open warfare in April 2023, has continued to intensify, with drone warfare becoming increasingly prevalent.

The RSF is known for its control over significant areas in Darfur, where it has established a parallel administration. This has led the Sudanese military to regularly launch airstrikes in Nyala and other RSF-held territories, further complicating the situation.

Earlier in October, the RSF had executed coordinated drone strikes targeting essential infrastructure in Khartoum, including airports and electrical transformer stations, which disrupted power supplies for large populations. Following the latest attack in Nyala, international officials have voiced deep concerns over the escalating violence.

In a joint statement released on Monday, representatives from the United States, the European Union, and over 30 other nations highlighted the alarming deterioration of food security in Sudan, urging both sides of the conflict to facilitate humanitarian assistance. They noted that the war has already led to tens of thousands of deaths and displaced more than 13 million individuals, contributing to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

As the fighting continues, both military and paramilitary forces have increasingly turned to the use of drones, signalling a shifting dynamic in the conflict. The implications of this grim development raise questions about the future of stability in Sudan amidst an environment marked by violence and heightened tension.
