U.S. Proposes Plan for Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has communicated with both Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon. On May 31, 2026, a U.S. official announced a proposal aimed at facilitating a gradual de-escalation of hostilities.
The proposed plan suggests that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group cease all attacks on Israel. In exchange, Israel would refrain from escalating military actions in Beirut. The U.S. official stated, "This would create space for gradual de-escalation and an effective cessation of hostilities."
Despite discussions, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri indicated that Hezbollah would commit to a ceasefire, but insisted that Israel must stop "shooting first."
Prime Minister Netanyahu, however, stated that he had ordered Israeli troops to advance further into Lebanon as part of efforts against Hezbollah, despite a prior ceasefire established over six weeks ago. Israeli military operations have reportedly led to the seizure of significant sites, including the historic Beaufort Castle and a strategic ridge in southern Lebanon.
Recent military actions were prompted by one of the most intense days of Hezbollah fire directed at northern Israel since the ceasefire was declared in April. This escalation has resulted in school closures and restrictions in northern Israel.
The U.S. official clarified that there were no expectations for Israel to tolerate continuous assaults on its civilians by Hezbollah. As the situation progresses, diplomatic efforts will remain pivotal in seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
