Iran Halts US Negotiations Amid Ongoing Israeli Strikes in Lebanon
Iran has officially halted its negotiations with the United States over ongoing military actions in Lebanon by Israel. This announcement was made by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on June 1, 2026. The suspension comes amid heightened tensions following a series of Israeli attacks on southern Beirut and other areas. Iran's official news agency, Tasnim, reported that the Iranian negotiating team has ceased message exchanges with US mediators in light of the deteriorating situation.
Araqchi stated, 'The ceasefire between Iran and the US is unequivocally a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon,' emphasising that any violation on one front constitutes a breach of the broader agreement. Iranian officials expressed that continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon and Gaza pose significant threats to ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
In addition to this, Iranian leaders announced intentions to escalate military actions against Israel, including plans to block the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz and activation of additional fronts involving their allies in the region.
Israel's military operations have intensified as ground forces conduct deeper incursions into Lebanese territory. The Israeli government has declared that these attacks are necessary to counter threats from Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group. On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered further strikes aimed at Hezbollah positions, stating, 'We will ensure that the attacks on our citizens cease.'
This military escalation has prompted reactions from the international community. Germany and Norway were compelled to cancel a planned visit to Beirut due to the security risks associated with the ongoing conflict.
Iranian officials have also highlighted that any temporary understanding reached between the US and Iran would necessitate more profound discussions about Iran's nuclear capabilities. Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, noted that Pakistan has acted as a mediator in this complex situation and offered the EU's support for a sustainable resolution.
As the escalation continues, Kuwait reported interception of missile and drone attacks targeting its territory, which Kuwait's military attributed to Iranian forces, prompting statements from its Foreign Ministry holding Iran accountable for the assaults. Meanwhile, the European Union issued a call for an immediate halt to Israeli military operations in Lebanon, urging respect for the nation's sovereignty.
The UN Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting to address the escalation in Lebanon today. The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict face significant challenges.
