China Criticises Japan and Philippines' Maritime Delimitation Talks
China condemns Japan and the Philippines over maritime delimitation meetings, citing violations of international law and regional stability concerns.

China has expressed its strong disapproval of recent talks between Japan and the Philippines regarding the delimitation of their respective exclusive economic zones and continental shelves. The Chinese government claims that this plan infringes upon its maritime rights and jeopardises stability in the region. The announcement from both countries to engage in what they term 'delimitation negotiations' has been described by China as an unjustified and counterproductive action.

According to a statement from Xinhua, the Chinese government emphasised that these negotiations represent a unilateral move, conflicting with international law. The waters involved are said to be closely linked to China's sovereign rights, particularly in relation to Taiwan and surrounding territories. Xinhua highlighted that any bilateral agreements should not violate the rights of a third party, especially in areas where sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction are disputed.

In recent comments, China reiterated that no country has the authority to negotiate terms relating to its maritime rights without obtaining consent. The statement accused Japan and the Philippines of proceeding with negotiations despite being aware of China's stance, framing the actions as a significant encroachment on Chinese rights and interests.

Furthermore, China raised concerns over the historical complexity surrounding maritime claims, particularly regarding several northern Philippine islands and Japan's Nansei Islands. There are longstanding disputes regarding territorial claims that Japan cannot dismiss through unilateral control or domestic legislation, according to the Chinese government.

Xinhua noted that while Japan and the Philippines advocate for solutions based on international law and negotiations, their actions hint at ulterior political motives. Japan allegedly aims to escape from its previously adopted 'defence-oriented policy', while the Philippines tends to engage external forces under the pretext of maritime issues to strengthen its security stance.

The timing of these maritime delimitation discussions has been perceived as a strategic effort to exaggerate regional threats and justify military agendas. Both countries have been involved in their own maritime disputes, with Japan accused of numerous contentious claims and the Philippines facing challenges in marine environmental protection and law enforcement.

China has called for respectful, fact-based dialogue aimed at genuinely resolving maritime disputes. According to the commentary, effective management of disputes should involve all parties concerned, without bypassing any stakeholders. Raising political tensions in the Asia-Pacific is described as a destructive approach that could result in conflicts and instability.

In conclusion, China has urged Japan and the Philippines to heed its concerns, immediately halt their negotiations, and focus on maintaining peace and stability in the regional context. Xinhua remarked that the emphasis should be on cooperation, constructive dispute resolution, and sustainable development rather than creating new tensions that could impair China’s legitimate rights, including those pertaining to Taiwan.
