Trump Considers Winding Down Military Operations in Iran
US President Donald Trump signals potential reduction of military efforts in Iran amid ongoing conflict and rising troop deployments.

United States President Donald Trump has indicated that his administration may contemplate 'winding down' military operations in Iran. This announcement comes as the administration has deployed an additional 2,500 marines to the region and sought further funding from Congress to sustain ongoing military efforts. In a recent social media update, Trump remarked that the US is 'getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East.'

Amid these mixed messages, oil prices have surged and impacted US stock markets. In an effort to combat rising fuel costs, the administration has decided to lift sanctions on Iranian oil already in transit. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later stated on social media platform X that military leaders estimated it would take approximately four to six weeks to realise the mission's goals.

Rosiland Jordan, an Al Jazeera correspondent reporting from Washington, noted that the four to six week timeframe, as mentioned by the Trump administration, is the latest update regarding the potential conclusion of Operation Epic Fury, launched on February 28. However, there has been a lack of clarity from the White House regarding the war's duration or the specific criteria for declaring victory.

Despite claims of a possible reduction in military actions, the conflict has intensified, with US-Israeli forces conducting strikes on Iran's capital, Tehran. These attacks coincided with Iran celebrating Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Reports have emerged of civilian casualties resulting from shelling in Kiashahr, where at least two people were reported killed.

Additionally, Iran has reportedly launched ballistic missiles targeting Diego Garcia, a military base in the Indian Ocean jointly operated by the US and the United Kingdom. The attack, taking place approximately 2,500 miles from Iranian territory, happened before the UK's Ministry of Defence granted authorisation for American operations at the base.

The Iranian government claims that their missile strikes against Israel continued on Saturday, with Saudi Arabia stating it successfully intercepted 20 drones launched towards key oil facilities.

Both the US and Israel have provided varying justifications for their military engagement in Iran, shifting from supporting internal uprisings against the Iranian regime to targeting its nuclear and missile capabilities. In a marked contradiction to Trump’s statements about potential de-escalation, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz asserted that both Israeli and US forces would 'significantly' increase their military strikes against Iran.

While Trump has maintained that he does not intend to deploy ground forces into Iran, he insists that all military options remain on the table. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, claimed on Friday that Iran has dealt significant blows to its adversaries and condemned the US-Israeli actions as a 'gross miscalculation.' During a televised statement marking Nowruz, he praised the resilience of Iranian citizens amidst the ongoing conflict.

Approximately 1,400 fatalities have been recorded in Iran due to the conflict, according to official figures, while Israeli bombings in Lebanon have resulted in over 1,000 deaths. In Israel, at least 18 individuals have died as a result of Iranian missile strikes, and 13 US soldiers have also been reported killed during the hostilities, as stated by officials.
