PM Modi Discusses Regional Stability with Iran's President
Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, addressing regional stability and freedom of navigation amidst ongoing conflict.

On 21 March 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which he extended greetings for Eid and Nowruz. Modi expressed his hopes for peace, stability, and prosperity across West Asia, particularly in light of current regional tensions.

This call marks the second conversation between the two leaders since the conflict erupted on 28 February, 2026. In the discussion, Modi condemned recent attacks on critical infrastructure within the region, highlighting their threat to both regional stability and global supply chains. He stressed the need to protect freedom of navigation and ensure that essential shipping lanes remain open and secure.

In a post shared on X, Modi noted, "Spoke with President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian and conveyed Eid and Nowruz greetings. We expressed hope that this festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia." He reiterated India's position on the necessity of addressing issues through dialogue and diplomatic means, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

With the current crisis in Iran following attacks by the United States and Israel on 28 February, retaliatory actions from Iran have raised concerns. The Iranian regime has reportedly restricted the flow of maritime traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for the transport of around 20 per cent of the world’s energy supplies.

Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged Iran's assistance in ensuring the safety and security of Indian nationals residing in Iran. On 12 March, President Pezeshkian had provided Modi with an overview of the ongoing situation in the region. This dialogue signals India's proactive engagement with various world leaders, including discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France, and Malaysia since the onset of the conflict.

As tensions remain high, the international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts continue to stabilise the region and address the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.
