Protests in Mathura Follow Death of Cow Vigilante Farsa Baba
Protests erupted in Mathura after cow vigilante Farsa Baba was killed in a truck accident, sparking allegations of foul play and public unrest.

A significant protest occurred in Mathura, India, following the death of cow vigilante Chandra Shekhar, known as Farsa Baba, who was killed in a road accident early on Saturday morning. The incident took place around 4 am on the Agra-Delhi highway, leading to a blockade by locals claiming that his death was a deliberate act by cow smugglers.

According to the local administration, Farsa Baba and a disciple had stopped a container truck on the highway near the Kotvan border, suspecting it was carrying cattle. However, during the inspection, authorities discovered the truck was transporting non-animal products, including soap, phenyl, and shampoo.

While the group was inspecting the vehicle, another truck from Rajasthan, which was loaded with wires, lost control due to dense fog in the area. The truck collided with the group, resulting in the immediate death of Farsa Baba on the spot. Reports indicate that the truck driver also sustained injuries and that the vehicle was damaged in the crash.

After news of Farsa Baba's death spread, allegations and suspicions arose among supporters who believed he had been purposefully run over. This led to unrest, including stone-pelting and roadblocks, prompting officials to respond to the situation.

Chandra Prakash Singh, the District Magistrate of Mathura, stated that officials were quickly dispatched to manage the protests and reassure the public that a thorough investigation into the incident would be conducted. According to eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media, protesters vandalised police and administrative vehicles, and clashes resulted in injuries to both six policemen and several demonstrators.

DIG of the Agra range, Shailesh Pandey, affirmed that the situation was eventually brought under control and assured that those responsible for the violence would face consequences. The highway has since been cleared, restoring normal traffic flow.

Coincidentally, on the same day as the protests, President Droupadi Murmu was present in Mathura, approximately 25 km from the incident site, participating in pilgrimage activities at Govardhan, where she engaged in religious observances.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding cow protection and vigilante activities in the region, which have implications for community safety and the management of dissent.

As the investigation proceeds, local authorities are facing scrutiny over how to address the underlying issues surrounding vigilante actions and the protection of livestock in India, where such practices can evoke strong emotions in both supporters and critics alike.
