Indian Navy to Commission Stealth Frigate 'Taragiri' on April 3
The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its latest stealth frigate, 'Taragiri', on April 3, 2026. The event will take place in Visakhapatnam and will be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, as announced by the Defence Ministry on March 21, 2026. This commissioning signifies a crucial advancement for India in its pursuit of naval self-reliance.
'Taragiri' is the fourth vessel of the Nilgiri-class under Project 17A and the third ship constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL). The vessel, weighing 6,670 tonnes, incorporates advanced weaponry, including supersonic missiles, designed to enhance combat effectiveness.
The Defence Ministry's statement highlighted that 'Taragiri' embodies the 'Make in India' initiative and showcases the engineering prowess of India's shipbuilding industry. The frigate was delivered to the Navy on November 28, the previous year, marking a significant step in achieving indigenisation in warship design and manufacturing.
The vessel represents an evolution in naval technology, reflecting substantial improvements in design, stealth capabilities, firepower, automation, and survivability. According to the Navy, 'Taragiri' is poised to be a 'premier hunter of the seas', equipped for various high-stakes operations ranging from direct combat to humanitarian assistance.
The frigate features a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, granting it high-speed capabilities and operational versatility. Its armaments include world-class surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and an advanced anti-submarine warfare suite. These systems are integrated via a sophisticated Combat Management System, allowing the crew to respond swiftly to emerging threats.
With over 75% of its components sourced from indigenous suppliers, 'Taragiri' reflects the growth of India's domestic industrial base, which includes more than 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This aligns with the government's Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) initiative, fostering job creation in the Indian defence sector.
The Indian Navy emphasised that the commissioning of 'Taragiri' will mark a crucial moment in enhancing India's maritime security and collective capabilities. It is envisaged not only as a formidable combat ship but also as a versatile platform for addressing modern diplomatic challenges and humanitarian crises. The Navy aims to establish itself as a 'combat-ready, cohesive, credible, Aatmanirbhar force', committed to securing India's maritime interests in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
In conclusion, 'Taragiri' stands ready to serve as a beacon of India's rising maritime power, reflecting the nationās commitment to indigenous defence production and technological advancement.
