Trump Considers Reducing US Troops in Europe Amid Tensions
Former US President Donald Trump suggests a potential withdrawal of American troops from Europe, amidst escalating tensions over the Iran conflict.

Former President Donald Trump has indicated a possibility of withdrawing American troops stationed in Europe amid rising tensions linked to the ongoing Iran war. In recent statements, Trump has mentioned Germany, Italy and Spain as potential countries from which US troops may be withdrawn, following criticism from European nations regarding his administration's strategy in the conflict.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump responded to comments made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who expressed concerns about the US’s military strategy. Merz stated that the US was being 'humiliated' by Iran and accused the Trump administration of lacking a viable plan to resolve the ongoing challenges in the region. He remarked, 'This conflict, this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic output.'

Trump did not take kindly to Merz's remarks, asserting that the Chancellor was uninformed about Iran's nuclear ambitions. Trump posted, 'Merz thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!'

In his subsequent post, he signified that the United States is 'studying and reviewing the possible reduction of troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time.' When questioned about the potential for troop reductions in Italy and Spain, he stated, 'Probably... Look, why shouldn’t I? Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible.'

According to a report by Reuters, a senior official from the White House revealed that discussions on troop withdrawals from Europe had taken place amidst tensions resulting from the conflict. The Pentagon’s Defense Manpower Data Center reported that around 68,064 active-duty US military personnel were stationed in Europe as of December 2025, with nearly 53,000 located in Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Prominent military installations in Europe include Ramstein Air Base in Germany, which has housed US troops since 1952. The US European Command, along with NATO allies, oversees military operations across the continent. Since the end of World War II, the US has maintained a significant military presence in Italy and Spain, with each country hosting thousands of active-duty personnel.

Historically, the deployment of US troops in Europe was a measure to ensure stability during the Cold War. However, Trump’s administration has increasingly faced criticism over its handling of foreign policy, particularly regarding the Iran war, which began on February 28 and continues to disrupt global markets, notably impacting shipping in the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Additionally, Trump's remarks have drawn ire from European leaders. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced criticism, with Trump labelling him as 'not Winston Churchill' for his stance during the early stages of the conflict. Furthermore, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was previously a supporter of Trump, faced his criticism after speaking against the Iran war.

Despite Trump's threats regarding troop levels, significant obstacles may arise. The US Congress plays a crucial role in military matters, and any substantial troop reductions could be hindered by legislative actions. Past attempts to withdraw troops have seen congressional pushback, with the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act declaring that US troop numbers in Europe cannot fall below 75,000.

In this context, as geopolitical tensions rise and the ramifications of the Iran war unfold, the future of US military engagement in Europe remains uncertain, highlighting the complex interplay between US domestic politics and international relations.
