Portion of Bridge Collapses in Jammu; Rescue Operations Underway
A section of a bridge collapsed in the Bantalab area on the outskirts of Jammu city on Friday, resulting in at least three to four labourers being trapped under the debris. One injured worker has been rescued by emergency services, according to official sources.
The incident occurred while the labourers were engaged in repair work on a retaining wall, which had been damaged during flash floods last year. Sources stated that a segment of the bridge suddenly gave way, causing workers present on site to be buried under the rubble.
In response to the collapse, police, the Army, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) mobilised quickly to initiate rescue operations. A single injured labourer was successfully extracted and transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention.
Witness accounts from family members present at the site indicated that around six workers were on the bridge at the moment of the disaster. They reported that two of the labourers managed to escape the falling structure, while four others became trapped. The trapped individuals included a woman labourer's husband, a mason, an unmarried worker, and a relative of the contractor.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation regarding the exact number of individuals still trapped beneath the debris. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams continuing to work diligently to extricate those who remain caught in the wreckage.
The road link has been temporarily closed to facilitate these operations, and authorities are urging the public to remain away from the area as the situation develops.
