Shreyas Iyer Leads Contenders for India's T20I Captaincy
Shreyas Iyer appears set to become India's new captain for the T20 International format as the team prepares for its upcoming series against Ireland and England. This potential appointment will mark the conclusion of Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy tenure, who notably led India to a T20 World Cup victory earlier this year. Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, will advise on Suryakumar’s future before the final decision is made regarding the captaincy. However, it seems increasingly likely that a change will take place.
Selectors are now prioritising a long-term leader who can guide India through the next two T20 World Cup tournaments. Despite Suryakumar Yadav's previous success, he has faced challenges with his batting form recently. In the IPL 2026, he scored only 270 runs over 13 matches with the Mumbai Indians, who finished in ninth place.
Shreyas Iyer’s robust experience and performance in recent tournaments give him a significant advantage in this leadership race. Among the contenders, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan also remain as potential candidates to assume prominent roles alongside Iyer if he becomes captain. Should Iyer be appointed, one of these two players would likely be chosen as his deputy in the T20 format.
As India looks towards the Asian Games, where they aim to defend the gold medal secured in 2022, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) must finalise the squad. Notably, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batsman coming off a successful IPL season where he accumulated 776 runs at an impressive strike rate of 237.20, is expected to feature in the selection discussions.
With established players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan already in the top order, it is anticipated that Sooryavanshi may still receive opportunities to play in the forthcoming seven T20 International matches against Ireland and England, which begin on June 26.
