Firhad Hakim Resigns as Kolkata Mayor Amid Political Unrest
Firhad Hakim steps down as Mayor of Kolkata, permitted by Mamata Banerjee, as the Trinamool Congress faces internal strife following recent elections.

Firhad Hakim has resigned from his role as Mayor of Kolkata, an announcement made on June 3, 2026. His resignation comes after a tumultuous period for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has been grappling with significant political challenges following a disappointing performance in the recent state elections held on May 4.

Hakim’s decision to step down appears to be a strategic move amid escalating internal conflicts within the TMC. The party has witnessed a series of upheavals, including defections and resignations, as well as the arrest of some of its members. According to reports, party leader Mamata Banerjee approved Hakim's request for a resignation, allowing him to leave his position with dignity.

Kunal Ghosh, a senior member of the TMC, confirmed that Hakim sought permission for his resignation, citing a desire for a dignified exit due to the deteriorating effectiveness of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Hakim, a long-time ally of Mamata Banerjee, has been a prominent figure in the party since its inception. During the recent legislative assembly elections, he emerged victorious as one of the 80 TMC members elected, even amidst the party's overall decline in electoral support.

The recent KMC office incident, where Hakim and KMC Chairperson Mala Roy were reportedly locked out during a scheduled meeting, further demonstrates the ongoing discord within the party. This event highlights the escalating tensions affecting the TMC's governance.

Political analysts suggest that Hakim's resignation reflects broader concerns regarding the TMC's ability to maintain its grip on power within the municipal assembly, as results from the latest elections show a marked shift in public support. The BJP has made significant advances, dominating over 100 of the 144 KMC wards, highlighting a possible end to the TMC's long-standing control over the city.

The next KMC elections will occur in December 2026, prompting speculation about whether the TMC can recover from its recent setbacks and restore its influence before the polls. Since assuming the mayoralty in 2018, Hakim has led the KMC through periods of both stability and crisis, but the current political landscape poses substantial challenges ahead for the party's future leadership and direction.
