Russian Strikes in Ukraine Leave 22 Dead, Including Children
Recent Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine have resulted in 22 fatalities, as calls for international aid grow louder.

A series of Russian missile and drone assaults overnight have resulted in the deaths of at least 22 individuals throughout Ukraine, including two children. This incident marks one of the most significant attacks carried out by Russian forces in recent months.

In Dnipro, regional officials have confirmed that 16 fatalities occurred, among them an eight-year-old boy and three women who were pulled from the wreckage of demolished apartment blocks. In addition, six people lost their lives in Kyiv amidst widespread destruction.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that civilian infrastructure across the nation was targeted during these attacks, which also left more than 100 individuals injured. Russia's Ministry of Defence responded, claiming that the assaults were retaliation for prior Ukrainian strikes, stating that all objectives of their operations had been fulfilled.

The Kremlin additionally remarked that these coordinated attacks were a continuation of the "systematic strikes" that had been previously announced, attributing their actions to Ukraine's attack on a student dormitory in an occupied region of eastern Ukraine late in May. Ukrainian officials, however, argued that they had specifically targeted a Russian military unit.

In his evening address before the attack, President Zelensky warned citizens about the potential for a large-scale strike and emphasised the importance of heeding air raid alerts. He subsequently reported that 656 drones and 73 missiles of various types had been deployed against Ukraine early on Tuesday.

Zelensky has made a renewed appeal to the United States for assistance in supplying missiles for Patriot air defence systems, which have been increasingly in demand as Ukrainian forces seek to intercept Russian projectiles more effectively. A noted concern surrounding the availability of these systems stems from the ongoing military engagements involving the United States and Israel against Iranian forces, further complicating supply lines.

The primary strikes were reportedly directed at Kyiv, where significant damage has been inflicted on numerous residential buildings and other civilian sites. Zelensky described the situation in Dnipro, where rescuers excavated through the ruins, stating that the destruction was extensive and that another child was confirmed dead following the night’s violence.

Casualties continued to rise, with reports indicating that over 90 individuals sustained injuries in both Dnipro and Kyiv. The region of Kharkiv in the north-east was also targeted, resulting in ten more injuries, including a child. Additionally, experts claim that an industrial facility in Zaporizhzhia was also impacted during the assault.

Smoke billowed from various locations in Kyiv early in the morning of the attack, prompting the city's military administration to issue warnings regarding ballistic missile launches. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko urged citizens to seek shelter as drone activity was reported along with numerous explosions.

Fires erupted in various districts, including near a petrol station and several apartment complexes, leading to widespread blackouts across the city. The metro system in Kyiv was used as a refuge by over 41,000 individuals, including nearly 4,500 children, marking a record number for recent years according to the metro company.

Residents recounted their experiences in the metro, with one individual stating that they had lost all hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Another elderly citizen expressed frustration over the perceived insufficiency of international support for Ukraine, suggesting that greater pressure on Russia could expedite an end to hostilities.

Meanwhile, reports emerged that a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s western Kursk region resulted in one death. Additional incidents included damage caused to an oil refinery in Krasnodar due to drone activity.

Since a temporary ceasefire ended in early May, Russia has engaged in multiple waves of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, including an incident that resulted in 24 deaths, three of whom were children. In retaliation, Ukraine struck various locations in the Moscow region, leading to reported fatalities.

The conflict in Ukraine escalated dramatically following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, and ongoing military actions have raised concerns for civilian safety amidst the violence. President Zelensky's appeals to international allies for increased support continue as the situation remains dire for many within conflict-affected regions.
