Russian Missile and Drone Strikes in Ukraine Result in Casualties
Recent Russian attacks have killed at least 11 people and heavily damaged Kyiv's historic Dormition Cathedral.

A significant overnight assault, comprising missiles and drones, has targeted various Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Kharkiv, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and widespread power outages affecting around 140,000 homes. The assault, described by Ukrainian officials as one of the most severe strikes on the nation's cultural and civilian infrastructure in recent months, has raised concerns about the ongoing conflict in the region.

Emergency services in Kyiv were engaged in firefighting efforts early on Monday after a fire broke out at the Dormition Cathedral, a prominent religious site within the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented, stating, "This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war." He emphasized the necessity for a robust response from the Group of Seven (G7) nations, advocating for increased pressure on Russia and enhanced support for Ukraine's air defence capabilities.

According to reports from Zelenskyy, the latest strikes have resulted in injuries to 53 people, including both civilians and emergency personnel. Maksym Ostapenko, the director general of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve, reported that a kamikaze drone directly impacted the cathedral's roof, igniting flames that engulfed approximately 800 square metres of the structure.

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is known as the Monastery of the Caves and has been a significant site for Christian pilgrimage, with an extensive network of underground caves that date back centuries. In a efforts to safeguard icons and valuable religious artifacts, monks and rescue personnel formed human chains amidst the chaos before firefighters managed to control the blaze.

The attack also adversely affected the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studios, obliterating its main costume repository and destroying an invaluable collection approximating 100,000 garments. Metropolitan Epiphanius I, the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, criticized the assault on the cathedral, calling it "a crime against humanity, against history, and against Christianity".

Yulia Svyrydenko, the First Deputy Prime Minister, remarked that the destruction reveals "the true face of Russia’s Orthodox values". Reports indicated that dozens of Shahed kamikaze drones alongside at least 15 high-speed ballistic missiles were directed at Kyiv during this attack.

In Kyiv, the mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported around 20 people were injured from various residential high-rises that sustained direct impacts, including a child and a pregnant woman. In Kharkiv, a tragic "double-tap" strike resulted in the deaths of five State Emergency Service rescuers after a second drone attack targeted them while they were responding to a fire caused by an earlier missile strike. Five more first responders sustained injuries from this subsequent strike, as confirmed by the local governor, Oleh Syniehubov.

On a diplomatic note, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin both engaged in separate discussions with United States President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing war, with Zelenskyy suggesting the call focused on potential pathways to peace, while the Kremlin indicated that negotiations involving the US and Iran were discussed.
