U.S. and Iran Finalise Peace Accord Ending Military Actions
In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the United States and Iran have reached a peace agreement, marking an end to military operations across the region. The announcement was made by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has played a crucial role in mediating the negotiations. An official signing ceremony is scheduled for 19 June in Switzerland.
The peace deal promises an immediate and permanent cessation of military actions, including those in Lebanon, as confirmed by Sharif. He expressed gratitude to the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their support in facilitating the negotiations.
The U.S. President Donald Trump, who marked his 80th birthday on the day of the announcement, confirmed the deal via a post on social media. He stated, "I hereby fully authorise the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorise the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!"
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes. It had been effectively closed following military strikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iran since late February, raising global energy prices. Following the announcement, oil prices dropped significantly, reflecting the expected resumption of shipments.
Prior to the announcement, tensions were palpable, especially after an Israeli airstrike in Beirut targeting Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which threatened the fragile negotiations. Despite these provocations, the agreement signifies a willingness from both parties to pursue a peaceful resolution. However, as of yet, no confirmation from Iranian officials has been provided.
Pakistan’s mediation efforts have been pivotal in fostering dialogue, with Sharif emphasising the importance of finding diplomatic solutions in a conflict that has caused extensive loss of life and instability in the region. U.S. officials have indicated that discussions surrounding Iran's nuclear programme and sanctions relief are expected to continue following the signing of the agreement.
As both nations plan to engage in further negotiations during a proposed 60-day ceasefire, the focus will shift to broader issues, including long-term stability in the region and the constraints on Iran's nuclear activities. In recent weeks, the conflict had evolved into a complicated geopolitical situation with profound implications not only for the involved parties but for global oil markets.
