Russia Accuses Ukraine of Drone Attack on Putin's Residence
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has alleged that Ukraine launched a drone attack on President Vladimir Putin's state residence, located in the Novgorod region, between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. According to Lavrov, the incident occurred overnight on December 28-29, involving 91 long-range drones, all of which he claims were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defences. This assertion has sparked significant tensions between the two nations.
In response to the allegations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the claims as 'lies', asserting that Russia aims to justify further military actions against Ukraine, particularly in Kyiv. Zelensky stated, 'This alleged 'residence strike' story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine.' He further accused Russia of routinely targeting Ukrainian government buildings, highlighting the ongoing conflict's volatility.
Lavrov's comments suggest that Russia may reconsider its stance in peace negotiations with Ukraine, indicating that the Kremlin's approach could change following what it deems a 'terrorist attack'. He stated, 'Given the final degeneration of the criminal Kyiv regime, which has switched to a policy of state terrorism, Russia's negotiating position will be revised.' However, he also mentioned that Russia does not plan to withdraw from the negotiating process with the United States, as reported by the Russian news agency Tass.
The escalation in rhetoric comes amid ongoing discussions between the United States and Ukraine regarding a potential peace plan. President Zelensky revealed that the United States has offered security guarantees for 15 years, with President Donald Trump indicating that an agreement on this aspect was 'close to 95%' complete. However, unresolved issues remain, particularly concerning territorial disputes and the status of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
Zelensky remarked on the contradictory nature of Putin's public statements, suggesting that while the Russian leader has expressed a desire to end the conflict in conversations with international leaders, his actions tell a different story. 'On the one hand, he tells the president of the United States that he wants to end the war and that this is his desire,' Zelensky noted. 'And on the other hand, he openly communicates in the media all his messages about being ready and wanting to continue the war.'
The situation remains tense, with Zelensky urging the international community not to remain passive in the face of Russian aggression. He stated, 'It is critical that the world doesn't stay silent now. We cannot allow Russia to undermine the work on achieving a lasting peace.'
As the conflict continues, both nations appear entrenched in their positions, with diplomatic efforts facing significant challenges amidst rising military tensions.
