Pakistan Sends Troops and Jets to Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions
Pakistan has deployed approximately 8,000 troops, a squadron of fighter jets, and an air defence system to Saudi Arabia, marking a substantial increase in military collaboration between the two nations. According to three security officials and two government sources, the deployment was confirmed and includes Pakistani military personnel equipped with advanced capabilities. The military collaboration comes in the wake of a mutual defence agreement signed in September 2025, which aims to enhance security measures amidst escalating tensions in the region.
The Pakistani forces comprise about 16 JF-17 aircraft, developed in collaboration with China, and two squadrons of drones. As per sources close to the situation, these assets are intended not only to bolster Saudi defences but also to provide advisory and training roles, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
In addition to the troops and aircraft, the deployment includes a Chinese HQ-9 air defence system, operated by Pakistani troops and funded by Saudi Arabia. The explicit details of the agreement, signed on 17 September last year, remain confidential; however, both countries concur that it obligates them to provide mutual support in case of aggressions against either party.
Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has previously acknowledged that the defence pact effectively includes a nuclear deterrent provision for Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate the potential for up to 80,000 Pakistani personnel to be stationed in Saudi Arabia, given the security conditions warrant such an increase.
Reports also suggest that this latest drawdown of forces is supplementary to previously stationed Pakistani troops, who are already engaged in various capacities under earlier agreements. The situation escalated earlier this year when Iranian strikes reportedly targeted critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, prompting concerns of retaliation and an expansion of conflict.
While the nature of the military cooperation appears robust, both the Pakistani military and foreign office, as well as Saudi media, have not commented publicly on the recent deployment. As Pakistan assumes a mediating role in the region’s tensions, it hosted direct peace talks between the United States and Iran, emphasising its strategic importance in seeking stability.
Amid these developments, Saudi Arabia has allegedly undertaken unreported retaliatory military actions against Iran, raising further complexities in the region. Historically, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share a relationship bolstered by military support and financial backing, particularly during times of economic hardship for Pakistan.
