India Unveils First Proposed Bullet Train Image at Railway Ministry
The image of India's first proposed bullet train is displayed at the Ministry of Railways as the country advances its high-speed rail projects.

The Indian Ministry of Railways has showcased a picture of the nation's first proposed bullet train, generating significant interest. The image is prominently displayed at Gate Number 4 of the ministry building in New Delhi. It features a sleek design with white, black, and yellow tones on an elevated track. The exact timing of the installation remains unclear, as does its connection to any specific project updates.

This initiative aligns with India's ongoing efforts to enhance its high-speed rail infrastructure, primarily exemplified by the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, which is seen as the flagship project in this domain. While the displayed image presents an appealing visual representation, it is not a depiction of an operational train.

Recent evaluations concerning the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor have clarified the current status of the initiative nearly nine years after its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, as of early May, construction on the corridor has advanced significantly, with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) reporting that all required 1,389.5 hectares of land has been successfully acquired and all statutory clearances obtained for the project.

Vaishnaw highlighted that India is currently laying tracks at a pace of 15 kilometres per month, which marks a notable increase from the initial estimate of 2 kilometres per month. He praised the collaboration with Indian Institutes of Technology and railway engineers for this acceleration, further noting that comparable projects globally average only 0.5 kilometres per month.

Work on the project faced delays in its initial stages due to land disputes, political challenges, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally, the project's target date was August 2022. However, significant advancements have been made recently, particularly with the successful lowering of the cutter head for the largest tunnel boring machine in India. This machine, weighing 350 tonnes and measuring 13.6 metres in diameter, will tackle the more complex underground sections of the corridor, which includes India's first undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will have 12 stations, including major locations such as Mumbai, Thane, and Ahmedabad. The NHSRCL reports that construction is progressing rapidly at several stations in Gujarat, with contracts already awarded for station plazas and elevated stations in Maharashtra.

The design showcased in the railway ministry is not a direct import of Japan's Shinkansen but a unique train created for the Indian context. In late 2024, the Integral Coach Factory awarded a contract to Bengaluru-based BEML to develop indigenous high-speed trains capable of operating at average speeds of 250 kilometres per hour, with aspirations for maximum speeds of 280 kilometres per hour.

The railway line is being constructed to allow for future train speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour. Two types of service are envisioned: a rapid express, halting only at major stops, and a slower, all-stations service.

The overall cost of the project has escalated to approximately ₹1.98 lakh crore, necessitated by delays and changes in project scope. Funding challenges are expected to be managed through support from the central budget rather than additional loans from Japan, which has previously financed a significant portion of the initial costs.

Minister Vaishnaw has stated that India will see its first bullet train operational by August 15, 2027, coinciding with the country's Independence Day, with phased rollouts expected. Initially, a 100-kilometre section between Surat and Vapi may start operations followed by other segments.

Overall, while the displayed image at the Ministry of Railways serves as a visual symbol of India's high-speed aspirations, the project continues to progress through various stages of development amid challenges and opportunities.
