Netanyahu Acknowledges Halt in Israel-Iran Fighting Amid Tensions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed a cessation of hostilities with Iran as of June 8, 2026. In a video statement, Netanyahu indicated that the cessation came following Israeli strikes aimed at what he termed a "terror regime" in Tehran. He underscored that should Iran resume its attacks, Israel would retaliate "with force."
Netanyahu further remarked on Israel's ongoing operations against Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group allied with Iran, asserting Israel's intrinsic right to self-defence.
The situation in West Asia intensified as missile exchanges occurred between Israel and Iran on the same day. Yemeni Houthi forces also launched a missile at Israel, exacerbating regional tensions. Israeli officials reported three waves of Iranian missiles targeting Israeli territory, prompting air defence measures in response.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Iran issued an urgent advisory to Indian citizens in light of the deteriorating security situation. The advisory recommended avoiding travel to Iran and urged Indian nationals currently in the country to exit immediately using available transport options.
India has expressed significant concern regarding the ongoing conflict, urging for immediate diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and protect civilian lives. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated, "These developments are a matter of utmost concern to the international community." It pointed out that the ongoing conflict has resulted in considerable human suffering and adversely impacted the global economy.
Additionally, there was mention of damage to UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Lebanese city of Tyre, attributed to Israeli bombardment. Tyre is an ancient city known for its historical significance and proximity to the Israeli border, housing remnants of Roman architecture.
On another front, airstrikes targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition camps in northern Iraq, with reports of casualties following the assaults. A senior Israeli official disclosed that airstrikes on Iran had been paused at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump but suggested readiness to retaliate should Hezbollah continue attacks on Israeli territories.
Amid these wide-ranging incidents, the Iranian military announced it would cease attacks on Israel, although the previous strikes reflected Tehran’s commitment to support its allies within the region. Observers are now questioning whether Iran perceives its regional position as robust enough to afford such military actions without inviting a larger conflict.
The evolving nature of the West Asia conflict holds implications for ongoing diplomatic negotiations aimed at achieving a more stable and peaceful resolution. As tensions continue to rise, the need for effective international dialogue remains critical to prevent further escalation.
