Iran Accuses US of Stirring Conflict with Israel Amid Ceasefire Tensions
Tehran holds Washington accountable for escalating tensions with Israel as hostilities resume between the two nations.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has openly attributed recent military exchanges between Iran and Israel to the United States, suggesting that Washington's involvement is undermining diplomatic efforts. Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei expressed concerns on June 8, stating that ongoing hostilities only complicate an already precarious diplomatic landscape.

Baghaei commented on the backdrop of violent confrontations, noting that mutual fire exchanges were exacerbating tensions. He claimed that Israel’s actions in Lebanon were intended to derail diplomatic progress and accused the US of complicity. As a signatory to the ceasefire established on April 8, Baghaei stated that Washington is directly responsible for violations of peace, which include military actions taken by Israel.

"The United States bears direct responsibility for any action the Zionist regime (Israel) takes in relation to violating regional peace and security against Iran," he said. The spokesperson's remarks coincided with a high-level visit from Pakistan’s Interior Minister to Tehran, aimed at facilitating indirect communication with the US.

Separately, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran's Parliament and a key negotiator, issued a strong warning against further ceasefire violations. Following a series of strikes exchanged between Iran and Israel, Ghalibaf accused both the US and Israel of upholding a ceasefire merely “on paper” while failing to implement it in practice.

He described the exchanges as the first significant military action since the ceasefire took effect two months prior, underscoring the fragility of peace in the region. Ghalibaf insisted that any lack of genuine effort to build trust would prompt Iran to deliver a decisive response to violations of the ceasefire.

Iran maintains that its agreement with the US should encompass the cessation of hostilities on all fronts, particularly Israel's operations in Lebanon. Nevertheless, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that these issues are perceived as separate, continuing military actions in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire.

In contrast to Tehran's approach, Netanyahu emphasised that should Iran resume attacks against Israel, a significant military response would follow. Israel's Defence Minister has also reaffirmed the continuation of military operations against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, indicating a persistent resolve despite calls for de-escalation.

The situation remains complex, with both nations temporarily halting further hostilities following the latest exchange of fire. However, the volatile atmosphere suggests that tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States are far from resolved. Ghalibaf’s warnings serve as a stark reminder that the potential for escalation remains high, contingent upon the actions of all parties involved.
