Indian Stock Market Declines Amid Global Tensions and Oil Surge
Indian stock indices drop over 1% following tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices, with significant foreign institutional outflows.

Indian stock markets experienced a notable decline on June 8, 2026, as geopolitical tensions escalated in West Asia and oil prices surged. The benchmark Nifty index fell by 1.04%, closing at 23,123.00 points. This dip occurred a day after Israel reported missile fire from Iran, heightening fears of renewed conflict in the region.

The Nifty index opened at 23,080 points, briefly climbing to a high of 23,267.30 points, before ultimately finishing lower. The rise in global oil prices was significant, with Brent crude oil futures increasing by 1.4% to approximately $94.38 per barrel, up from $93 the previous Friday.

Out of about 3,400 traded stocks, most reported declines, with the Nifty Healthcare sector being the only positive performer amid the broader downturn. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) had a significant impact, selling approximately ₹51,000 crore (about £5.7 billion) in the first week of June. This inflow led to a 0.2% depreciation of the Indian rupee, which traded at ₹95.54 against the US dollar, according to figures from the Clearing Corporation of India Limited (CCIL).

Market analysts attributed the weakness in stock prices to the escalating situation in the Middle East and its influence on oil prices. Nandish Shah, Deputy Vice President at HDFC Securities, remarked, "The weakness was largely driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East, which pushed crude oil prices higher and boosted safe-haven demand for the U.S. dollar."

Moreover, better-than-expected employment data from the United States has reignited expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), further dampening global risk appetite and strengthening the U.S. dollar, which has implications for international markets.

The market's decline is a stark reminder of how broader geopolitical events can influence local economies and investor sentiment globally. Analysts suggest that ongoing monitoring of both local and international developments will be essential for predicting future market movements and investor behaviour.
