Modi Promises Uniform Civil Code in Bengal, Assures Bengali Rights
Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledges to implement a Uniform Civil Code in West Bengal, promising protection for Bengali identity ahead of elections.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Jangipur, West Bengal, on April 11, 2026, where he vowed to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. This initiative aims to eliminate what he described as the 'politics of appeasement.' Modi declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is committed to ensuring Bengalis do not become a minority within their home state.

The Prime Minister's statements came during the lead-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections, where the BJP seeks to challenge the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) dominance. Modi's rally was held in Murshidabad, a district with a significant Muslim population, highlighting the BJP's strategy to appeal to various voter groups.

The pledge to enforce the UCC forms part of the BJP's broader election manifesto, which was unveiled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah the day before. Modi referred to the manifesto as a guiding framework for dismantling what he termed the 'maha jungleraj' or 'great jungle rule' of the TMC in West Bengal.

In prior rallies, both Modi and Shah raised concerns surrounding issues such as women's safety and corruption under the TMC government. Modi asserted that if the BJP comes to power, it would fast-track the process of granting citizenship to refugees, aligning with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He assured groups such as the Matua and Namashudra communities that their rights would be protected under the Indian Constitution.

Union Home Minister Shah echoed Modi’s sentiments about women’s safety, promising a BJP government would enable women to feel safe across the state. He also asserted that the BJP would hold those responsible for violence against party workers accountable. Shah claimed that more than 300 BJP workers have been victims of politically motivated violence in West Bengal.

As the BJP strengthens its campaign in West Bengal, the TMC under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has rebuffed claims made by Modi and Shah, accusing the BJP of spreading misinformation and trying to manipulate the electoral process. Banerjee highlighted her government’s initiatives aimed at increasing women’s representation and safeguarding their rights.

Mamata Banerjee warned her supporters to remain vigilant against possible electoral malpractices by the BJP, suggesting that the party might attempt to rig the election outcomes. She also mentioned that the BJP’s focus on the UCC could undermine various religious practices and traditions.

The BJP's election strategy in West Bengal appears to centre on a blend of promises aimed at governance reform, community rights, and a robust critique of the incumbent government, setting the stage for a contentious electoral battle in the state.
