Modi Accuses Kerala's LDF and UDF of Corruption Ahead of Elections
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intensified the campaign for the upcoming Kerala Assembly election scheduled for April 9 by strongly criticising both the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF). Speaking at a rally in Palakkad, Mr. Modi accused the two political fronts of perpetuating corruption and misgovernance, claiming they have alternated power for decades without benefiting the people of Kerala.
Modi described the politics of both fronts as detrimental to the state's resources and growth opportunities. He positioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a decisive alternative, pledging a vision of a "Viksit Kerala"—or Developed Kerala. The Prime Minister assured the gathered crowd that an NDA government would focus on creating more employment opportunities to curb the migration of educated youth from the state. "It is Modi’s guarantee to you. The NDA’s guarantee is Modi’s guarantee," he declared.
He further accused both the UDF and LDF of misleading the public regarding their political affiliations with the BJP, calling their claims that each labels the other as the BJP's 'B-team' a tacit acknowledgment that the BJP is the real "A-team" in Kerala.
For decades, Mr. Modi said, Kerala has remained trapped in a cycle of corrupt rule from both parties. He elaborated, stating, "If one was communal, the other was overly communal; if one was corrupt, the other excessively corrupt. Both UDF and LDF have cheated the public by relying on vote-bank politics."
The Prime Minister cited the growing debt of Kerala, claiming it has reached ₹5 lakh crore, a figure he said has tripled in the past ten years. "The money has gone into the pockets of the LDF," he asserted. In contrast, he promised that a BJP government would focus on recovering funds and ensuring they are used for public welfare.
Highlighting what he termed negative practices by both political alliances, he claimed that they prioritised their own success over the best interests of the public. He denounced their reliance on vote-bank politics and the adverse effects this has had on governance, stating, "Both alliances have functioned as 'practical partners' despite their perceived rivalry."
The Prime Minister also underscored the NDA's commitment to empowering women and ensuring their safety, contrasting this approach with that of Congress leaders, whom he described as barriers to women's progress. Highlighting the work done by the Central government, he noted that significant financial allocations have been made to Kerala in various sectors but accused the state government of mismanagement.
Modi pointed to Kerala's economic potential in agriculture and tourism as critical resources yet to be fully harnessed, noting the alarming trend of youth migration due to a lack of local employment opportunities. He promised support for the farming community, stating that the NDA would remedy current hardships faced by local farmers.
On a broader note, Modi highlighted the importance of transparency, asserting that if the NDA were to take power, they would expose the alleged corrupt practices of both the UDF and LDF. He concluded with a message to the people of Kerala, asserting their ability to bring about change and urging them to consider the NDA as the only credible alternative in their upcoming decision at the polls.
