On March 28, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Noida International Airport, marking a significant development in the aviation sector of India. Located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, this airport is the second in the National Capital Region, designed to bolster economic growth and connectivity in the area.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about the airport's role in transforming both Uttar Pradesh and India as a whole. He stated, "Today we are starting a new chapter for a developed Uttar Pradesh and a developed India." Although the airport's operations were originally planned to commence in October 2025, a specific timeline for the start of flights has not yet been disclosed.
The construction of the Noida International Airport began after the laying of its foundation stone in November 2021, following a concession agreement with Zurich Airport International AG signed in 2020. With a total investment amounting to ā¹11,200 crore (approximately Ā£1.1 billion), the airport will, in its initial phase, cater to 12 million passengers annually, facilitated through a single runway. Future developments envision an eventual capacity to accommodate 70 million passengers on up to six runways.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the airportās potential to create new opportunities for local farmers, small and medium enterprises, and the youth of western Uttar Pradesh. He commented, "Flights from here will connect directly to the world, and the airport will stand as a symbol of a developed Uttar Pradesh taking flight." The facility is expected to support a catchment area that includes major cities such as Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, and Meerut, enhancing regional connectivity
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also weighed in, stating that the new airport would enable the establishment of a dedicated multimodal cargo hub, helping the state overcome its geographical limitations and connect more effectively with global markets.
The current geopolitical landscape, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia, was another area of concern addressed by the Prime Minister. He noted that the situation has disrupted the supply of essential commodities such as food and fuel in several countries. Modi assured citizens that the government is actively working to mitigate the impact of these global challenges, particularly for ordinary families and farmers.
As the new airport prepares for its future operations, it has already received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which is a crucial step towards beginning commercial flights. The authorities have yet to announce a specific commencement date for operations, leaving many eager to understand when this significant new hub will begin serving the public.
As the largest airport in India, upon its full completion, the Noida International Airport is expected to be a pivotal player in enhancing tourism by offering access to numerous religious and cultural sites across the region.
