Indian PM Modi Discusses West Asia Situation with Saudi Crown Prince
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about the West Asia conflict, emphasising freedom of navigation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a telephonic discussion on Saturday, March 28, 2026, with Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia. The main focus of their conversation revolved around the escalating conflict in West Asia, where both leaders stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and maintaining secure shipping routes.

During this second conversation since the conflict intensified on February 28 with military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s condemnation of attacks on regional energy facilities. The Indian Prime Minister acknowledged the significance of open shipping lanes, especially as the Strait of Hormuz remains a crucial passage for maritime trade, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supplies are transported.

In a statement on social media platform X, Modi expressed his gratitude to the Crown Prince for his ongoing support towards the welfare of the Indian community in Saudi Arabia, which numbers around four million individuals. This outreach reflects India's aim to provide safety and assistance to its nationals in the region amidst ongoing tensions.

The situation in West Asia has become increasingly dire due to Iran’s military responses affecting its neighbours, contributing to heightened geopolitical instability. The Indian government has actively reached out to leaders in the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as to those in Iran and Israel, calling for de-escalation and the restoration of crucial supply chains that impact millions, including the estimated ten million Indians residing in West Asia.

Additionally, Modi has been in regular contact with various world leaders to discuss the West Asia situation. Noteworthy interactions include discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan. In support of these communications, U.S. President Donald Trump has also had discussions with Modi, which the Indian Prime Minister described as a "useful exchange of views" regarding the escalating conflict.

This ongoing diplomatic engagement highlights India's proactive strategy in responding to the crisis and ensuring the safety of its citizens while advocating for international shipping security amid the turbulence engulfing the region. The urgency for cooperation among nations remains critical as the ramifications of the conflict extend beyond borders, impacting global energy security and economic stability.
