Mirra Andreeva Advances to First Grand Slam Final at French Open
Russian teen Mirra Andreeva secures her place in the French Open final after defeating Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in a commanding semi-final performance.

Mirra Andreeva, the 19-year-old Russian tennis star, reached her first Grand Slam final with an impressive win over Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk at the 2026 French Open. The victory came in straight sets, concluding at 6-1, 6-3, marking a significant milestone in Andreeva's young career.

This win makes Andreeva the youngest women's singles finalist since Coco Gauff achieved the feat in 2022. Earlier in her career, Andreeva had previously suffered a semi-final defeat at the same tournament in 2024, but this time her performance exuded confidence and skill.

Her opponent in the final will be determined between compatriot Diana Shnaider, who is the 25th seed, and Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska. Andreeva displayed strong form throughout the tournament, emphasising her readiness for a Grand Slam title.

As the third-youngest woman to reach the Roland Garros final in this century, Andreeva joins a prestigious group that includes Kim Clijsters and Coco Gauff. Should she win, she would become the third-youngest player to clinch a first Grand Slam title this century, after Maria Sharapova and Emma Raducanu.

In her post-match interview, Andreeva expressed her emotions, stating, "I am still very, very nervous. I was nervous coming into this match. All of these feelings combined, it is amazing - I have never felt anything like this before."

The context of this match was underscored by ongoing tensions due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Kostyuk has been vocal in her criticism of the war and previously opted not to engage in a pre-match photo with Andreeva. The players also refrained from shaking hands at the end of the match, reflecting the strained relationship between athletes from the two countries.

Despite the backdrop, Andreeva's performance was marked by poise. She capitalised on her opponent’s errors, committing fewer unforced mistakes during the match. At one point, Kostyuk managed to break back in the second set, but Andreeva quickly countered, closing out the match after 76 minutes of play.

Andreeva’s exceptional run in 2026 has made her one of the standout players on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, with 21 wins on clay and 35 overall this year—the highest among all competitors. Following the surprising exit of world number one Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the tournament, Andreeva's confidence has surged as she prepares for the final.

Her tactical approach and resolve proved effective, as she maintained focus despite a crowd that largely supported her opponent. Andreeva's journey to the final has involved a remarkable domination of matches, having dropped only one set in the entire tournament.

As she looks ahead to the final, Andreeva stated, "Until this match, she has not lost a match on clay. She is an amazing player and a very tough opponent, and I am super happy with the way I played today. I told myself to accept everything that happens on the court and no matter what happens, I am going to fight and give my best. With this kind of mindset, I ended up winning the match."

Andreeva will walk onto the court for the final with high expectations and a chance to make history as she seeks to capture her first Grand Slam title. With a strong showing throughout the tournament, she has established herself as a player to watch in the coming years.
