Marta Kostyuk Advances to French Open Semi-Finals, Dedicates Win to Ukraine
Marta Kostyuk secures a historic win at the French Open, dedicating her quarter-final victory to Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.

Marta Kostyuk has made headlines by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open for the first time, becoming the first Ukrainian woman to achieve this feat in the Open era. The 23-year-old emerged victorious against seventh seed Elina Svitolina in a closely contested match that ended with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Kostyuk’s remarkable journey comes as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine looms large in her thoughts.

The quarter-final battle marked a historic moment as it was the first major quarter-final featuring two Ukrainian players. This milestone came shortly after a missile and drone strike in Ukraine resulted in the loss of at least 18 lives. Following her match, an emotional Kostyuk dedicated her victory to her homeland.

"We had another difficult night in Ukraine, especially in Kyiv where so many people died, so I want to give this match to Ukraine," she said, visibly moved as the crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier applauded her.

Kostyuk praised Svitolina, calling her "a legend of Ukrainian tennis" and recognising her influence on the sport. This victory reflects the resilience of Ukrainian athletes amid the hardship brought on by the war that has persisted since February 2022. "It's a big inspiration for the next generation. I think this is great for sports in general in Ukraine," said Svitolina, reflecting on the significance of their representation in the tournament.

With this win, Kostyuk continues her impressive streak, having won 17 consecutive matches on clay this season. She will now face Russian player Mirra Andreeva in her next match, as she aims for a spot in the final on Saturday.

During her post-match interview, Kostyuk shared the impact of the conflict on her life. She had previously shown journalists a photograph of a building on fire near her family home in Kyiv, emphasising the emotional toll of her situation. In discussing her stance towards Russian athletes, she stated, "For me, it's not frustrating anymore. They are all grown-ups. They are clearly aware of what's going on."

Kostyuk has made a point of not engaging in handshakes with players from Russia and Belarus during the tournament, underscoring her principles amidst these difficult times. Looking ahead, she expressed her desire to secure the title, while also acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead, stating, "I still think it [the title] is very far. I have two matches to play."

As the crowd rallied around her, waving Ukrainian flags and offering their support, Kostyuk managed to conjure a smile, reminiscent of her victory celebration in Madrid, where she previously remarked, "I promised I will only do it again when I win a final."

Marta Kostyuk’s journey at this year’s French Open represents not just a personal achievement, but also a beacon of hope for many back home in Ukraine, who continue to face uncertainty amidst ongoing strife.
