Leica Launches First 35mm Noctilux-M Lens Incorporating New Technology
Leica Camera has introduced the Noctilux-M 35mm f/1.2 ASPH., marking the first 35mm lens in its prestigious Noctilux line. Since its inception in 1966, the Noctilux designation has symbolised Leica's commitment to optical excellence, and this latest model aims to uphold that legacy.
The Noctilux-M 35mm f/1.2 ASPH. offers a fast aperture combined with exceptional imaging performance. The term 'Noctilux' is derived from Latin, meaning 'night light', highlighting its capacity to perform in low-light conditions. According to Leica, the lens produces sharp and vivid photographs while featuring a smooth, velvety bokeh effect at its maximum aperture.
This new lens boasts an extended close-focusing capability, allowing users to focus as close as 0.5 meters (1.6 feet). This feature marks a significant advancement, as previous Noctilux models were limited to a minimum focusing distance of 0.7 meters. However, it is important to note that only the new Leica M EV1 camera will fully utilise this capacity; rangefinder cameras will need to employ Live View or the Visoflex viewfinder to achieve close focus beyond 0.7 meters.
The optical design of the lens comprises ten elements arranged in five groups, including three aspherical elements. The incorporation of a new optical manufacturing process known as Precision Glass Molding (PGM) allows for a higher degree of geometric freedom and surface precision. Leica asserts that this innovation will minimise optical aberrations, enhance micro-contrast, and produce a more natural bokeh effect, while also leading to a more compact and lightweight design.
The PGM technique achieves tolerances as fine as three nanometres per millimetre of diameter. Leica claims that this precision directly improves image quality, making this lens a noteworthy advancement in lens engineering made in Germany.
Weighing in at 416 grams (14.7 ounces) and measuring just 50.2 millimetres (1.98 inches) in length, the new Noctilux-M is designed to be both manageable and high-performing. The lens is compatible with 49mm front filters, which also adds versatility for photographers.
In comparison, the Voigtländer Nokton 35mm f/1.2 Aspherical IV presents a similar size but is much lighter at 300 grams (10.6 ounces) and measures approximately 52 millimetres (2.04 inches) long. However, the price difference is significant; the Voigtländer lens retails for around $1,000, while the Leica Noctilux-M 35mm f/1.2 ASPH. is available for nearly ten times that amount at approximately $9,650.
The release of the Noctilux-M 35mm f/1.2 ASPH. reaffirms Leica's dedication to pioneering optical technology and premium quality in photography equipment. The lens is already available for purchase through Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and authorised dealers.
