Delhi SWAT Commando Dies Following Alleged Domestic Assault
A member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Delhi Police has died following an incident involving her husband, prompting a murder investigation. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Kajal, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday after an alleged attack with a metal dumbbell.
The assault was reported to have occurred on January 22 at the couple's residence in Dwarka Mor, southwest Delhi. According to police, Kajal's husband, Ankur Chaudhary, 28, allegedly attacked her during a dispute regarding domestic issues and dowry demands.
Following the initial assault, Ankur reportedly made a phone call to Kajal's brother, Nikhil, during which he allegedly confessed to the attack. According to Nikhil, Ankur asked him to record the conversation as evidence, stating, "I am going to kill her." In a chilling account, Nikhil recounted hearing his sister screaming before the call was cut off.
Just minutes later, Ankur allegedly contacted Nikhil again and informed him that Kajal had been killed. Nikhil stated that when he arrived at their home later that night, Ajay's relatives were already present, and Kajal had been taken to a nearby hospital where she was subsequently declared brain dead.
Kajal was originally from Ganaur in Haryana and had joined the Delhi Police in 2022 after completing her commando training. She was part of the SWAT unit, a specialised branch tasked with handling high-risk operations.
The couple had a love marriage in November 2021 and had a young son aged approximately 18 months. Following the incident, the police arrested Ankur on the same night and charged him with attempted murder. However, as Kajal later died from her injuries, the charges have now been upgraded to murder. Madhup Tiwari, the Special Commissioner of Police for Law and Order, stated that a case has been registered based on the evolving circumstances.
This tragic incident sheds light on the often-hidden issue of domestic violence, even within law enforcement families. Authorities have reiterated the importance of addressing domestic violence in all forms and ensuring that victims receive the necessary support and protection.
Kajal's death has raised concerns regarding the safety of women in abusive relationships, particularly among those who serve in protective roles. As investigations continue, there is a call for greater awareness and solutions to combat domestic violence in society.
