Kyiv Endures Significant Attack as Zelenskyy Issues Warning
At least 22 fatalities reported following a massive Russian assault on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, prompting calls for increased air defence.

A substantial missile and drone assault on Kyiv has resulted in at least 22 deaths and numerous injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had alerted citizens just hours prior, cautioning of a significant, impending attack from Russia. The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed the casualties by Thursday evening, highlighting the ongoing threat to civilian areas after a series of overnight strikes.

The attacks reportedly targeted an ordinary nine-storey residential structure, causing extensive destruction with one missile destroying 64 apartments. Zelenskyy shared images on social media that depicted a gaping hole across multiple floors of the partially wrecked building, surrounded by debris. He condemned the strikes as deliberate assaults on civilians, stating that upwards of 130 civilian sites in the capital had been affected.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported that children were among the injured, as damage spread across at least 30 locations throughout the city. The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that Russia launched 74 missiles and nearly 500 drones, with air defence forces managing to intercept a significant portion—48 missiles and 476 drones—but still witnessing heavy impacts. A total of 25 ballistic missiles and 12 drones reportedly struck 33 locations.

As Al Jazeera’s Audrey MacAlpine covered, the drone blitz began shortly after midnight local time. Witnesses noted the sounds of interceptions followed by large explosions around 2 a.m. Many residents had reportedly anticipated an attack and sought refuge in the city's subway systems.

Emergency response teams are currently conducting search and rescue operations, as the situation remains dire. Various locations impacted include an ambulance station, a research institute, and numerous residential buildings. The attack has also led to extensive destruction of cultural assets, with an estimated 800,000 books destroyed in a warehouse of BookChef, a Ukrainian publishing house.

In response, Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims. Speaking on the ongoing conflict, Zelenskyy had been in Ireland for diplomatic talks but returned promptly to Ukraine upon receiving intelligence about the threats. He reiterated to the public to heed air-raid alerts, noting, “We know that Putin has been preparing a massive strike against Ukraine for some time.”

Russia's Defence Ministry described the operation as a “massive attack” targeting military infrastructure and claimed the strikes were a response to Ukraine's assaults on Russian oil facilities. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Moscow intends to maintain pressure on Ukraine amid ongoing hostilities.

Condemnation of the attack has been echoed by European leaders, with the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, calling for the imposition of additional sanctions in light of Russia's continual aggression. Meanwhile, officials in Ukraine are advocating for enhanced military support, specifically requesting advanced missile systems to bolster air defence capabilities.

As the situation develops, rescue operations continue in Kyiv, with officials warning that the final casualty figures may still rise. This incident underscores the escalating intensity of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, amidst ongoing discussions surrounding military support and defensive strategies against aerial attacks.
