Venezuelan Security Guard Rescued Eight Days After Earthquake Disaster
A 43-year-old security guard, Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, was rescued on Thursday after being trapped for eight days in the basement of a shopping centre in Venezuela. The rescue followed the devastating effects of two earthquakes that struck the coastal region, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. These natural disasters resulted in substantial loss of life, with reports indicating nearly 2,300 confirmed fatalities and over 11,000 injured.
Hernán Gil Flores, who worked night shifts at the Galerías Playa Grande, was inside his small security cabin when the quakes occurred. Miraculously, his cabin created a pocket of air that protected him from debris during the collapse. Following days of search efforts, teams from the Costa Rican Red Cross managed to establish contact with Gil Flores, who initially requested rescuers not to inform his wife that he was alive, fearing the worst.
On Thursday, amidst cheers from international rescue teams, Gil Flores was extracted and transported to safety, igniting relief and celebration among both rescuers and onlookers. His wife, Gusbimar González, expressed her emotional journey from despair to hope upon hearing the news of his survival.
The operation was spearheaded by a dedicated team of urban search and rescue specialists from various nations, including Chile, the United States, Portugal, and Mexico. They faced numerous challenges, including torrential rains and further aftershocks, while carefully tunnelling to reach Gil Flores. Throughout his ordeal, rescuers supplied him with water and nutrients to keep him stable.
As efforts continue, the focus is shifting from rescue to addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of those affected by the quakes. Preliminary estimates indicate that over 58,000 buildings may have been damaged or destroyed, leaving approximately 13,000 people homeless. The World Food Programme has issued an appeal for $50 million to provide food for nearly 500,000 individuals amid increasing needs for shelter and medical care.
With many families still hoping for the survival of their loved ones trapped beneath the rubble, rescue efforts face a challenging task in the face of dwindling optimism concerning additional survivors. Officials warn of an impending health crisis as available medical resources are stretched thin, exacerbated by years of economic hardship in the country.
Russ Gauden from the UK’s International Search and Rescue team stated, “The community remains resilient, and we are hopeful that we may still discover additional survivors, despite the significant devastation.” As the situation evolves, humanitarian organisations prepare for a concerted response to the mounting challenges ahead in the recovery phase, facing a devastated region still grappling with the repercussions of the natural disaster.
