Kerala Court Imposes Life Sentence for Doctor's Murder
A significant verdict was delivered on Saturday by the Kollam Additional District and Sessions Court, sentencing G Sandeep to life imprisonment for the murder of Dr Vandana Das. This case, initially arising from a brutal attack on May 10, 2023, saw Sandeep fatally stab Dr Das multiple times inside a hospital. The 22-year-old was a final-year medical student on duty at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital when the incident occurred.
The court's sentence included a total of 30 years for various charges under the Indian Penal Code, which comprises attempt to murder, grievous hurt, and other offences related to creating chaos within the hospital environment. Special Public Prosecutor Prathap G Padickal confirmed that Sandeep would serve these prison terms before beginning his life sentence.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution indicated its intention to appeal for a death penalty, arguing for the maximum punishment. Padickal noted, "The court likely did not see this as qualifying for the death penalty, but we will pursue an appeal for harsher consequences."
Familial reactions to the court's judgment have been mixed. Dr Das's father expressed that while the family felt some relief, he questioned if true justice had been achieved, stating they would consult with legal representatives about pursuing a more severe sentence. Meanwhile, her mother expressed an emotional plea for the harshest punishment available, conveying her wish that Sandeep should experience the suffering her daughter endured during the attack. According to reports, Dr Das was stabbed 27 times.
The court previously found Sandeep guilty of numerous charges, confirming that his actions fell under the provisions of the Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act 2012, which aims to protect medical professionals.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of May 10, when Sandeep, who is a school teacher by profession, was taken to the Kottarakkara hospital after sustaining injuries from an altercation with neighbours. Once at the hospital, he launched an unexpected attack with a pair of surgical scissors, first assaulting police officers and a companion before targeting Dr Das. Following the attack, she was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Dr Vandana Das was an only child and hailed from Kaduthuruthy in the Kottayam district. She was performing her mandatory training at the hospital when the horrific event transpired. The grim nature of her death prompted widespread protests in Kerala, leading to legislative amendments aimed at enhancing protections for healthcare workers across the state. The detailed judgment from the court, which addresses all aspects of the case, is awaited as further proceedings are planned.
