Israeli Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon Result in Multiple Casualties
Israeli forces launched airstrikes and drone attacks across southern Lebanon on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals. This escalation occurred just hours after a ceasefire agreement with the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah had been established, according to reports from the Lebanese National News Agency and Reuters.
The airstrikes targeted the Nabatieh region, where Israeli military aircraft and drones struck residential buildings, leading to significant destruction. Additional artillery fire was reported in Nabatieh and surrounding areas early in the morning.
The ceasefire, which took effect shortly before 4 PM local time on Friday, was facilitated by diplomatic efforts led by the United States and Qatar with backing from Iran. This truce was confirmed by a senior Israeli official as well as two sources from Hezbollah speaking to Reuters. Officials involved in the negotiations indicated that the agreement aimed to stabilise Lebanon’s volatile southern border and support broader diplomatic initiatives in the region.
This ceasefire follows one of the most intense periods of violence between Israel and Hezbollah in recent time. Reports indicate that the conflict resulted in the deaths of approximately 40 people in Lebanon from Israeli airstrikes, while four Israeli soldiers were killed in Hezbollah attacks. However, the truce has already shown signs of fragility, as Lebanese security sources reported that Israeli attacks continued even after the ceasefire was initiated.
Israeli military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated that Israeli forces maintain full operational freedom to respond to threats, with ongoing operations in the Beaufort Castle area and the Ali Taher ridge. He accused Hezbollah of maintaining military infrastructure and not adhering to the ceasefire terms.
The resurgence of violence has also complicated regional diplomacy, with talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland expected to resume after being postponed due to the conflict. Concerns have been raised that renewed fighting in Lebanon could hinder these crucial negotiations, which are linked to regional security and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
