Israeli strikes in Lebanon risk undermining a fragile US-Iran ceasefire, as tensions rise over the Strait of Hormuz and regional security.

The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is under strain as intensified Israeli military operations in Lebanon raise fears of a renewed regional conflict, with disputes also emerging over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The two-week truce, brokered with the involvement of Pakistan, had been presented by both Washington and Tehran as a step towards de-escalation in the Middle East. However, developments on the ground suggest that the agreement’s durability remains uncertain.

Escalation in Lebanon

Israel has carried out a series of large-scale air strikes across Lebanon, targeting what it describes as positions linked to the Hezbollah militant group. According to Lebanon’s civil defence authorities, at least 254 people have been killed and more than 1,100 injured in recent attacks, with significant damage reported in the capital, Beirut.

Israeli military officials said the strikes were aimed at command centres and military infrastructure. They have accused Hezbollah of operating within civilian areas, a claim disputed by Lebanese residents and officials.

The bombardment has also hit infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including transport links and facilities essential for daily life. Local sources report shortages of food and medical supplies, particularly in areas cut off from the rest of the country.

More than 1.2 million people have reportedly been displaced, as evacuation orders cover large parts of southern Lebanon and districts near Beirut.

Dispute Over Ceasefire Scope

A central point of contention is whether Lebanon was included in the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the cessation of hostilities was meant to apply across the region, including Lebanon. Pakistani officials involved in mediation have echoed that interpretation.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and United States President Donald Trump have maintained that the truce does not extend to Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah.

This disagreement has fuelled tensions between Tehran and Washington. Iranian officials have warned that continued strikes in Lebanon could prompt them to reconsider participation in ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Further complicating the situation, Iran has again restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route through which a significant portion of global oil supplies is transported.

The United States has described the move as unacceptable, urging Tehran to reopen the waterway. The restriction has already affected shipping activity, raising concerns in global energy markets.

Iran has indicated that it may introduce charges for vessels transiting the strait, a proposal opposed by Washington. Analysts say any prolonged disruption could have wider economic consequences beyond the region.

Diplomatic Efforts and Pressure

Amid mounting concerns, Prime Minister Netanyahu has announced that Israel is prepared to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon. The move follows pressure from the United States, which is seeking to prevent the Lebanon conflict from undermining the broader ceasefire with Iran.

According to Israeli officials, the talks are expected to focus on disarming Hezbollah and establishing longer-term security arrangements. Initial meetings are anticipated to take place in Washington in the coming days.

Despite this diplomatic opening, Israeli authorities have indicated that military operations in Lebanon will continue for now.

The Lebanese government, with backing from France, has for weeks advocated for negotiations aimed at ending hostilities and preventing a prolonged occupation of southern Lebanon. A French proposal reportedly includes steps towards formal recognition between the two countries, though it has not been accepted by Israel.

Conflicting Claims of Success

Both sides of the US-Iran agreement have portrayed the ceasefire as a success. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that American and allied forces had achieved a decisive military outcome, reducing the threat posed by Iran.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have claimed that their conditions were accepted, describing the agreement as a strategic victory.

However, differing interpretations of the deal’s terms have contributed to uncertainty over its implementation. Analysts note that such ambiguity often complicates ceasefire arrangements, particularly in multi-front conflicts involving regional actors.

Context and Regional Implications

The situation highlights the complexity of Middle Eastern geopolitics, where conflicts are often interconnected. Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, is widely regarded as an ally of Iran, while Israel views the group as a direct security threat.

Any escalation in Lebanon risks drawing in other actors and undermining broader diplomatic efforts. The involvement of global powers, including the United States and European countries, underscores the international stakes.

The Strait of Hormuz dispute adds an economic dimension, given its importance to global energy supplies. Even limited disruptions can influence oil prices and international markets.

As negotiations continue, the coming days are likely to determine whether diplomatic efforts can stabilise the situation or whether renewed hostilities will further destabilise the region.
