Iran Identifies US Officers Responsible for Minab School Strike
Iran has publicly named two United States Navy officers whom it holds accountable for a missile strike on a school in Minab that resulted in numerous casualties. The missile attack occurred on February 28 and reportedly killed approximately 175 people, including many children.
The Iranian embassy in India released images of the officers, identifying them as Leigh R. Tate, the commanding officer, and Jeffrey E. York, the executive officer of the USS Spruance. In a post on the social media platform X, the embassy alleged that the two officers authorised missile launches that led to the deadly incident.
"Remember these two criminals. Leigh R. Tate and Jeffrey E. York, who ordered the launch of Tomahawk missiles three times, killing 168 innocent children at a school in Minab," the statement read. Similar posts were shared by the Iranian embassies in South Africa and Nigeria, questioning the morality of the officers and asking if they had children of their own, expressing disbelief that they could live with their actions.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack during a recent urgent debate in Geneva as a "calculated, phased assault" that targeted the Shajareh Tayyebeh Girls' School. Araghchi asserted that the attack was deliberate and highlighted the significant loss of life among students and educators.
On the other hand, an investigation by the US military indicated a possible targeting error linked to outdated intelligence. A report by The New York Times noted that preliminary findings suggested the missiles intended for a military facility adjacent to the school may have been misdirected due to inaccuracies in mapping data.
US military officials are continuing their investigation, citing that critical questions remain, including why intelligence was not thoroughly verified before the strike. A spokesperson for the US military has reiterated that the United States does not intentionally target civilian structures and is meticulously reviewing the incident.
In a separate development, President Donald Trump suggested that Iran might be responsible for the strike, highlighting that Iranian munitions typically display inaccuracy. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, condemned the US action, labelling it a war crime, and shared video evidence of the attack on social media.
The strike came amidst escalating tensions in the region, with US and Israeli forces engaged in military actions against Iran. In retaliation, Iranian forces targeted Israel and positions in Gulf states, escalating an already volatile situation across the Middle East.
