Last Rites Held for Industrialist Vijaypat Singhania in Mumbai
Vijaypat Singhania, former chairman of Raymond Group and Padma Bhushan recipient, passes away at 87; funeral attended by prominent figures.

The last rites of Vijaypat Singhania, former chairman of the Raymond Group, were conducted in Mumbai on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Singhania, aged 87, passed away the previous day, on March 28, 2026.

A key figure in the Indian business sector, Mr. Singhania led the Raymond Group for two decades. He was recognised as a Padma Bhushan awardee for his contributions to Indian industry. Notably, he was an adventurer and set a world record for achieving the highest altitude in a hot air balloon.

His son, Gautam Singhania, currently the chairman of the Raymond Group, announced his father's passing on March 28. He expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform the passing of Padma Bhushan Dr. Vijaypat Singhania. A visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality, whose legacy will continue to guide and inspire generations. We pray for the departed soul to attain eternal peace.”

The funeral service, held at Chandanwadi Crematorium in Kalbadevi, Mumbai, took place at 3 p.m. and was attended by family and friends. Among the attendees was Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who paid his respects. Mr. Shinde referred to Singhania as a “trustworthy” individual in the business community and recalled his history with Thane, commenting on his achievements, including flying in a microlight aircraft from London to Delhi.

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed their condolences, lamenting the loss of a notable industrialist. Mr. Fadnavis highlighted Singhania’s impressive contributions to the textile industry, charitable efforts, and adventurous spirit. He remarked, “His contribution to the textile industry, his philanthropy and adventurous spirit will continue to inspire generations together.” He also noted, “Raymond - The Complete Man is not just a tagline we all grew up with.”

Following the funeral, Singhania’s daughter-in-law, Nawaz Modi Singhania, reflected on his impact, stating, “He was father-like to me, was one of the greatest men I will ever have the honour of knowing. He was like a second father to me, guiding me, advising me, supporting me, and providing for me at the highest.”

Congress Member of Parliament Varsha Gaikwad expressed her condolences, recognising him as a significant figure in Indian industry. She stated, “Saddened by the passing of Dr. Vijaypat Singhania, former Chairman of the Raymond Group, former Sheriff of Mumbai, and a towering figure of Indian industry.” Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also shared her heartfelt condolences, praising Singhania as an industrialist, aviator, and philanthropist who inspired many individuals across various fields.
