Iran prepares for a week-long funeral for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died during recent airstrikes amidst ongoing conflict.

Iran is preparing for a week-long funeral for its late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who passed away on February 28, 2026, following airstrikes attributed to Israel and the United States. The funeral proceedings are set to begin on July 4, 2026, in Tehran, with expectations that millions of citizens will participate in what is anticipated to be a significant show of support for the Islamic Republic.

The preparations have been marked by the display of banners urging citizens to unite in honour of the deceased leader. This large-scale turnout is reminiscent of the funeral of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founding Supreme Leader, who died in 1989.

As Iran navigates this period of mourning and political uncertainty, it seeks to reinforce its position in the ongoing geopolitical tensions, especially regarding its strategic influence over the Strait of Hormuz. This vital maritime passage is crucial for global oil supply, and Iran's control of it is a significant factor in its negotiations with the United States for a resolution to the ongoing war.

The late leader's coffin, which is draped in the Iranian flag, has been placed at Tehran's Grand Mosalla, where family members who lost their lives in the airstrikes are also being commemorated. Among those being honoured are Khamenei’s son-in-law, his eldest daughter, and a 14-month-old granddaughter.

Prominent officials, including Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, are expected to pay their respects at the funeral, alongside international dignitaries. General Ahmad Vahidi, who leads Iran's Revolutionary Guard, made a public appearance for the first time in months, highlighting this moment’s significance for the nation.

Speaking ahead of the funeral, Mohammad Hossein Rezaei, a volunteer engaged in preparations, stated, “As long as these people, who are chosen (by God), are on the field, we will definitely continue the same 'no to humiliation' policy that was founded by the Islamic Republic.” He emphasised Iran's commitment to independence and the right of the Iranian people to shape their future.

The mourning process included traditional rituals, such as families of those who lost their lives during the recent conflict offering scarves and tokens to bless the coffin, which is a customary gesture in Iran.

Meanwhile, the Iranian military command issued a warning to perceived adversaries, particularly the United States and Israel, against any attempts to exploit the situation, indicating that such actions would prompt significant retaliation.

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Khamenei’s son and successor, has not been seen publicly since the airstrikes and it remains uncertain if he will make an appearance at the funeral. His presence could be pivotal, considering he has been identifiable as the next leader of the country during a tumultuous time in Iranian history.

As preparations unfold, the coming days are expected to shape not only the narrative surrounding Khamenei's legacy but also the future political landscape of Iran as it seeks to navigate internal and external challenges effectively.
