India's IT Minister Orders Meta to Address Instagram Abuse Ads
The Indian government takes action against Meta for Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse material, as per IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's orders.

The Indian government has responded firmly to the issue of child sexual abuse material being advertised on social media platform Instagram. Following concerns raised about inappropriate content, Indian Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to summon Meta, the parent company of Instagram.

This action marks a significant move by the government to tackle child exploitation online. The directive aims to ensure that Meta takes immediate steps to eliminate such harmful content from its platform.

Officials emphasise the importance of social media companies maintaining stringent surveillance over content shared on their sites. The directive follows a growing scrutiny on tech companies regarding their responsibility in preventing the dissemination of illegal material.

Vaishnaw stated, “We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material and will not hesitate to take strict measures against platforms that fail to act.” In recent years, concerns regarding online safety and the protection of children have prompted governments worldwide to take stronger stances on digital content regulation.

As this situation unfolds, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is expected to engage with Meta to discuss compliance and future preventive measures. The government’s decisive action highlights the increasing urgency to create a safer online environment for young users.

The scrutiny of tech giants regarding their content moderation practices is likely to intensify, as public and government expectations for accountability continue to rise. The outcome of this engagement could set a precedent for how digital platforms manage and regulate content related to child protection in the future.
