Iran Expresses Distrust in U.S. as Tensions Rise in Peace Talks
Iran's chief negotiator warns of distrust in U.S. amid ongoing tensions and revised proposals from President Trump regarding peace talks.

Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has declared that the United States is not a trustworthy partner in negotiations, specifically stating that Iran will not engage in any agreement unless its rights are fully acknowledged. His comments were made following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump had submitted a firmer peace proposal to Iran. The remarks highlight the substantial divide that remains between the two nations, indicating that further changes to the proposal could postpone an agreement aimed at formally concluding the conflict in West Asia.

Tensions have escalated as negotiations about Iran's nuclear programme have continued since earlier discussions in February, when the U.S. and Israel conducted airstrikes that severely affected Iran's senior leadership. While Iran claims that its nuclear programme is solely for civilian purposes, the U.S. and its allies are concerned that the programme may be aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

Reports from The New York Times and Axios outline that Trump’s new framework aims to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway. Trump remarked that a key stipulation for him is the assurance of no nuclear weapon development from Iran, a claim that Tehran has questioned.

“We will not approve any agreement until we are certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been upheld,” Ghalibaf stated in a televised address. Despite ongoing discussions, no agreement has been reached, and according to Tasnim news agency, the exchanges regarding a possible memorandum are still unfolding, with proposals for amendments being made by both parties.

For Iran to commit to more serious negotiations regarding its nuclear programme, it demands the release of $12 billion in frozen assets, dismissing earlier statements from Trump about the destruction of its enriched uranium stockpile as unfounded. Additionally, Iran insists that Lebanon's situation be included in any potential agreement, particularly as tensions persist with Hezbollah, which has been accused of escalating conflicts in the region.

Though direct fighting had reduced following a temporary ceasefire mediated by Pakistan in April, there have been reports of sporadic violence. According to state broadcaster IRIB, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards shot down a U.S. military drone reportedly approaching Iranian waters, though this incident has not been confirmed by Washington.

Recent clashes culminated in U.S. military strikes on the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, leading to retaliatory strikes by Iran. Diplomacy continues amidst rising pressures on Trump to reach a formal agreement that would alleviate the blockades imposed by both nations around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil transportation. Regarding potential deals on tolls for ships in the strait, Iranian news agency Fars reported conflicting statements, indicating discrepancies between the two parties.

Iranian lawmaker Alireza Salimi stated that plans to enforce Iran’s management and sovereignty over the strait will soon be submitted to parliament, which includes provisions for administrative fees for navigation. In the wider context of regional instability, Israel has recently confirmed its military actions within Lebanese territory, declaring a commitment to intensify its operations against Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that these actions signify a decisive shift in military strategy amid ongoing hostilities.

The complex situation surrounding Iran, the U.S., and Israel continues to develop, raising concerns over potential escalations in the conflict and a broader regional impact as negotiations strive to find a resolution.
